What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

[DDD] Capriccio 14 x cd box-set (p) 2004

The 'Piano Sonatas' translation on the cover is misleading, all 14 discs are sonotas played on various harpsichords and one piano forte (as above).

Fantastic box set, imho she does to harpsichord-Haydn what Hewitt does to piano-Bach.

Probably a typo EJ but I believe this recording dates from 1960.  The Deutsche Grammophon Etudes date from 1972.

How is this recording?  Any differences compared to the later recording?  This is in my queue and nearly got ordered today but will have to wait a few more weeks.

 Chords,

Thanks for a very nice recommendation.  I put this directly on my Wish List along with some of his other works.   Same goes for the previous recommendation of Rolf Lislevand.

It is hard to explain why certain music resonates or sticks in one's head while other music may simply not have the same effect.  This recording by Ragna Schirmer is simply one of my favourites and most treasured albums of music that I own and it is all solely due to the Beethoven-Etüden alone.  I have only listened to the Sinfonische Etüden a few times probably; I know these well already anyways.  On the other hand I must have listened to the Beethoven-Etüden repeatedly adding up into the hundreds of times.  This music has had such a profound effect on me.  It is Beethoven through Schumann's dreams and visions.   I have a high degree of reverence for both composers.

Unpublished in Schumann's lifetime, the music comes from three sketchbooks in which he probably worked on individually between 1831-1835 as part of his own compositional studies.  Some of them remain unfinished.  It is just hard to imagine how these pieces could have remained unpublished during his lifetime and to this day it is a relatively unheard of piece.  It is only my good fortune to have happened to be Ragna Schirmers number one fan and that she has recorded this here.

Well, I believe it has been about a year and a half since I first heard this and looking back at how excited I was when I heard this then I can say I am even more excited today.  I finally picked up the score last week and now the real work begins as I'll transition from a listener only to a listener and a  player.  It is a humbling experience but it only just reinforces to me what an astounding pianist Ragna Schirmer really is - a musical soulmate, she is.
