What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Beethoven Piano Sonata No.21: Guiomar Novaes

She's becoming one of my favourite pianist. I started out with her Schumann pieces which are lovely and now this earlier Vox pressing replaced later Turnabout reissue. This Van Gelder mastered vinyl sounds natural and dynamic for the vintage. (mid 50s )

I love her funky "Waldstein".

More textural than "The Sparrow And The Crow" yet equally as good.

Worth a listen of you liked his earlier release.

La Fida Ninfa: excellent.

Jaroussky's voice is not very simple task for the HiFi set.

Jelly Roll Morton playing "Creepy Feeling" on Vol 8 of his Library of Congress Recordings.  These were made by Alan Lomax on acetate in about 1938, shortly before he died, and my copy is on vinyl on the (Australian) Swaggie label from the 1970s.  It's fantastic stuff.  The recording quality is awful but somehow that's part of the joy of it.  There's a CD version on the Rounder label (unfamiliar to me) which claims to be "remastered from the original acetate discs at the Library of Congress using Sony Direct Stream Digital technology and restored using the Cedar Cambridge system" but I don't know, somehow I think you'd lose as much as you gained by fiddling with it.  Maybe the Dust to Digital crowd will have a go at it one of these days - they generally get a pretty good balance between restoration and preservation.

Kuma,

i just put it on again for a night-cap day-cap.

Yes, i would say he is very agreeable, nice sense of timing, nothing fudged, passion and care where needed.

I know nothing about playing a piano, but it’s funny how i can like what i hear from one pianist far more than another, even if they are both top class.

Just wondering if the Waldstein is a difficult piece to play (?) it sounds like it may be to me, and was Orazio Fugoni really born with three hands?

My Vox record has some slight surface noise continuo but is in okay condition for it’s age, the sound engineering is a bit 1950's piano tone fuddy duddy but the warmth, emotion, and message is communicated regardless.

I think if he was onto a good modern recording he may just sound similar fluid and easy on the ear as Alfred Brendel ( hoping EJ can answer me that one ; )

The Waldstein is a very cute peice to absorb deeply is it not?
