What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

fIREHOSE Flyin' the Flannel

On vinyl. Loved this band in college. Mike Watt rules the thunderstick. They recently reunited for a small west coast tour around their Coachella performances. I saw them here in Seattle at Neumo's and was blown away. Great music from a refreshing trio that gave me all the stops and starts I love from Rush but in a much more stripped down form. And great sounding recordings. Unprocessed sounding. Watt's bass so percussive and tuneful. Hurley's drums snappy and nuanced. Kind of a punk rock version of Stuart Copeland. Ed from Ohio on Guitar with both clean and nice fat distortion. The energy of punk with jazz breaks and then they drop something like "In Memory of Elizabeth Cotton" on "if'n".

Mike watt has done a ton of very good things since these fIREHOSE days including working with Nels Cline and Eddie Vedder.

He is coming to Seattle again this September 28 with The Missingmen at a great little club called The Tractor Tavern in Ballard where I have seen some amazing shows.

Connon, by the weirdest coincidence, I was looking around for something I hadn't played for ages to listen to and I came up with this:

Listening to it now on SST vinyl, and very good it is too.
