What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011
With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Another instrument - another approaching.
Almost another music.
Here is an exquisite string arrangement to the variations by Dmitry Sitkovetsky:

Inspired by the flow of others I went to my Goldberg section, closed my eyes and randomly pulled out Rosalyn Tureck's interpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations.
For my present mood, this is a wonderfully serendipitous and appropriate. I don't want any 'performances' today, just the bare essentials; the plain, unadorned truth. This is a version for cloud watching and the beauty of the dimensionless time devoted to simple contemplation. Laying on my back on a hill in the meadow of tall grasses and wild flowers, babbling brook nearby, blue sky and interesting clouds, thinking of nothing outside of timelessness and space....

Sounds good
Pictures of Matchstickmen, Ice In The Sun, Down The Dustpipe, In My Chair ... great band.
Nice reminder, I have not listened to this for awhile (so I'll put it on)
On CD.
On CD:-
Hi Dave, if you enjoy Nighttime Birds you may consider the 2CD version from the Gatherings Webshop. The 2nd CD is a different studio recording which the label did not release because it was not a producer they wanted. Depending on my mood, the 2nd disk sounds better because of the sparser recording.

If your familiar with The Gathering, that's fine, but if you want some pointers for more stuff let me know.

Hi Denis. I have placed an order for the 2 CD version. I don't know the band that well, and would be gratful for a few pointers.
Thanks
Dave
Hi Dave,
I've been meaning to start a Gathering thread for some time and your interest is the push I need.
In the meantime...
I'll start you with two CD's to try first, which are available on amazon as well as the bands Webshop of course.
#1 is Mandylion, which is the bands 3rd album and the 1st lineup change & musical direction. This introduced Anneke Van Giersbergen, whom I have admired ever since I discovered the band.
Some samples to help...
In Motion #1 - This is the first song the band recorded withh Anneke in a professional studio.

Strange Machines @ Pinkpop 1996 - One of the first videos I saw of the band (only last year!)

#2 is How To Measure A Planet (2CD, which is available on 2LP from the bands Webshop). This was the bands 5th album, after "Nighttime Birds" (4th).
Tracks...
Great Ocean Road - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoR_i7XAh9k&feature=related
Rescue Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dcm6xRORFU8&feature=related

Good luck and enjoy.
Denis
Hi Denis,
Thanks for taking the time and trouble for these pointers. I'm looking forward to listening to more of this bands work.
Dave
Pacini really doesn't look a lot like Argerich, but you wouldn't say so from this cover. I like her Schumann, it's impetuous but lyrical and nicely scaled. Conductor Szulc and the provincial orchestra don't do a half bad job, but Pacini frequently pulls ahead of them and takes over with a slightly higher tempo, which could be considered technically questionable but furthers a sense of urgency, which is welcome given the overall sweet, lyrical approach. On the whole, the performance really works.
The Mozart is a nice bonus, well played but without the insight that Perahia, Brendel and Uchida, and recently Hewitt, bring to this work.
Pacini's tempi in general are sensible and flexible and she applies quite a bit of - non-intrusive - rubato. The recording quality is only OK, realistic but with average dynamic range and less sparkle to the Steinway than we usually hear from modern recordings.
Overall verdict: not essential, but recommended if you're looking for an alternative to established recordings of the Schumann (or even the Mozart).
Cheers,
EJ
From the good to the great: an outstanding disc, with some of Liszt's best works and Lugansky on top form.
