First spin of this new recording of the Beethoven violin sonatas, on authentic instruments. Too early to say much about the performances save that first impression is great, and the recording sounds fantastic, with possibly the most realistic of the pianoforte I have yet heard.

Hearing Nézet-Séguin conduct Bruckner on these Atma discs reminds me a bit of the early recordings by Haitink and the RCO in the 60s. These symphonies are not the finished article, some ideas work better than others, but the results are very exciting. The recording is warm and reverberant, but with only average dynamic range and that does hurt the interpretation somewhat, but then none of the established Bruckner 9s have reference quality sound, save perhaps Chailly (and he is controversial).
The (unfinished) symphony itself is pure gold.
Cheers,
EJ
