What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Superb
Again. It's Really Growin' On Me...
steve

Another superb album.

Another superb album.

Stu,
I have tried Mojo this month following the tragic closure of The Word. Like you I am happy with it plus the CD is a great compilation, like something my mate David would have put on cassette for me.
Jono
Jono,
I don't buy mags.
My son just popped round said dad i got you a copy of this as its up your street.
Stu.
I went through a phase of buying Car and then Hi-Fi World before giving up on magazines for a bit.
But when The Word appeared it was just soon much better than anything else I just got back into buying it.
Mojo does feel a bit like a grumpy old man's comic but as that is what I have become then I guess it's OK for me.
Smoke Fairies - Through Low Light and Tress now.
Jono
Jono,
Check out the guestlist network mag if you want to feel young.
Stu.
Wake Up Call - Not Mayal's best stuff but still a great album.

How does it sound?
I'm holding out for vinyl.
matt,
Good album.
I would join you, but its a bit late to play it here as i like the volume up when playing Pearl Jam records.

I reckon you are correct. it is 9:05 P.M. here so that makes it around 2 A.M. in your part of the world. I am listening to the reissue on which they spread the album out over 2 LPs. It sounds pretty good.

Matt,
I only have the double 180g vinyl with book album.
The original I heard for the first time when it came out.
When my son used to play it loud in his bedroom and i used to do the dad thing.
TURN IT DOWN.
Stu.
Cheers

The acoustic version of this superb album, on CD. All recorded live in one session at The Motor Museum, Liverpool. Arrived this morning and has received a couple of plays. Excellent recording quality to boot :-

The higher registers sound clipped [doctored up in the digital remastering perhaps] and some of these notes sound oddly quiet as some sound too loud… strange, it’s difficult to find the comfy spot with the volume, to loud and it can get shrill, too quite and it can’t be heard.
The sound quality is just a bit too hard and brittle, the only warmth is in the lower bass registers which does occasionally growl out quite splendidly.
After getting accustomed to the sound, i jumped to 'disc 5' and tracks 8-10 sonata no.17 in D minor. After two plays I put on the same sonata from my Clara Haskil box set [decca] which is a 1955 recording.
This immediately surprised me how much better it sounded, far better resolution, beautiful fluidity, realism, closer softer volume, vase with flowers, and Clara to show me how it’s done, more of everything : )
Although... having run the Regis set down somewhat, it’s not actually all that bad, Kemff’s play is very admissible to the workings of my own mind, and i want to explore more of this set.
Recordings from 1951-1956 is all the date information given, no recording locations, very budget box job, disc’s enclosed in those poly-paper envelopes like the ones in the Marcelle Meyer box-set.
My way around this remastered mono harshness is to play them in my upstairs system on the loud side, and let the room acoustics process and mellow out the sound though the door to where i listen from next room along in my office [or from the bathroom sat in the tub] ...seems to work anyway : )
"Fly" by the mighty Yoko, on Jap CD
On the original vinyl:-
Original Industrial Records vinyl LP. Gotta love the Gristle!
