What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

LP - EMI (p) 1968 : )

Rather bashful full on Beethoven style with nothing Mozartian and smooth in composition like one hears in his 1st piano concerto. Barenboim playing is aggressive, bold and confident. Complete change of plan into 2nd movement with blissful sensitivity from both DB and the NPO, haven’t got to the 3rd movement yet but it 's on the way : )

I thought I'd try a 'Pure Audio' hi-def BluRay. I like Sara K's other recordings so I thought I'd take the plunge!

The disc contains three separate sound media - PCM stereo, PCM 5.1 surround & dts Master Audio 5.1.

Unlike DVD-As you don't need a display to navigate the disk, just press the coloured buttons on the remote to switch between the options and press number buttons to select tracks. I'm playing it with my Oppo BD83SE player, which is doing the decoding, into the multi-analogue audio inputs on my AV2 thence to the 552 in unitary gain mode.

Sound quality? very good indeed. The multichannel options are interesting but I tend to prefer the PCM stereo, which I presume is 24/192 (it doesn't tell you on the disc).

The only downside is the music's rather bland and uninteresting...

Koyaanisqatsi - Philip Glass. I love this piece of music, which is of course not what he'd intended...

This is a really nice CD. It has a fantastic version of Van Morrison’s ‘Tupelo Honey’& Anne Peebles ‘ICan’t Stand the Rain’.

Starts of with some very nice melodies coming out of the wind section, fabulous sense of timing though-out which seems to seamlessly change every few bars, and nicely flavoured with romantic rhythm.

Difficult to believe this was recorded so long ago, and no disturbing noises from the audience either.

Highly enjoyable! : )

Debs

Debs,

I have been through my set twice now.

Should play more as a whole .

I get stuck on three discs though..

Stu.

Stu,

may get a bit overdosed on playing the set as a whole,

i like to pick and choose one when i get the desire : )

His Bruckner is very fine imho, but i don't get the Brahms so easy.

now playing disc 3 of 10 cd box-set...

Symphony no.7 in E major

Wiener Symphoniker 1958 (Live)

..this is perfect for the mood i'm in : )
