What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Yes ... it is blue, which probably is why it sounds so good

Stu,

I have had this album for a few years  and I think I bought at  Reckless Records(now defunct!) in Islington along with a bunch of other jazz records. It's a true gem!

Along with some just George Shearing albums.

Funny old wold.

"Reckless Records' are alive and well in Chicago. ( I was just there yesterday~ )

And the Beauty and the Beat! is available at the Broadway store, atm.

Beauty and the Beat!

It's been a while I've listened to my copy but IIRC, it wasn't really a live recording but studio recording with overdubbed applause. ( and it shows as the sound quality of the record isn't as good as it can be )

I cant get enough of this album at the mo.

It just rocks and when the vocals come in its heaven.

btw, I found a fabulous Beethoven's PIano Concerto 4th today.

It's Ivan Moravec with Vienna Symphony playing a Bösendorfer!

The only other music I have on him is Schumann's Piano Concerto. ( someone recommended to me ) but it's ho hum.

This budget box by Connoisseur Society Label surprised me with both the sound ( particularly playing right after 70s Deuche Gramophone records ) and Moravec's interpretive skills on the 4th concerto.

Kuma,

Moravec has excellent recordings of Chopin as well as Beethoven's piano sonatas.

Haim,

I did not see the Chopin Box set but there were two other Beethoven set that are just as new at Dave's.

I was mainly on the hunt for the Beethoven Piano Concertos yesterday, tho.

I saw you listen to his stuff, too.

The 'Forest Scenes' recorded just a few years earlier in 1947 but there is need for ones ears to acclimatise to 'the hiss’ and drop in quality, Haskils play does it's best to cut though this muff to communicate, I’ve heard these piano pieces before and it’s so nice to hear them again played out so eloquently.

Op.54 is so overtly a passionate piece that hard to imagine Clara crying out for her lover as I imagine she is an introvert. Have you listened to Argerich/Rabinovitch-Barakovsky?
I'd think Clara is more at home with 'Forest Scense'. Hopefully I'll get to her Audite CD this weekend.

The No.4 included in the Audite CD is Dean Dixon/RIAS-Symphony Orchestra recorded live in '54. I am still getting used to the No.4 as when I first heard this piece it didn't stick to me right away. Needed a few listens and now I am liking it over familiar No.3. Curious to hear how Clara plays this one out.
