What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

And some stuff John Peel Played.

The first ever set on authentic instruments and based on historically informed musical practices, this  made a splash in 1987 but quickly lost the limelight to Brüggen, Gardiner and others, who were following the same principles but, according to the press, less dogmatically than Norrington. It's dirt cheap now, so I took the plunge. I don't know what to say - I must have had mud in my ears / brains for dismissing this set so easily *). Norrington and his band display solid musical values, which no amount of historic instruments can replace. Tempi are all over the place, quite fast on the whole of course. The very different balance between woodwind, percussion and strings allows some beautiful give and take between instrument groups, something that largely is absent from all modern sets I've heard so far. Once you get used to it, at no point there is a feeling that a bigger orchestra would have done more justice to these works, even in the 5th or 9th. The recordings are beautifully done, with a big dynamic range and satisfying 'oomph' to the lower instruments. Highly recommended, especially at the tenner or so it goes for nowadays,

Cheers,

EJ

*) Assuming that there is no mud there now, of course.

I caught a small section of Diamond Smiles earlier so I stuck this on - I always loved songs about people dying when I was a teenager Still like this one - ..."and went out kicking at the perfumed air..." .

This still stands up as one of the best live Blues rock albums of the last ten years imo.

On CD or Vinyl.

Just picked this one up today.  Was curious - recorded at the Apple Studios in December of '71 and mastered by none other than Doug Sax.  Patchy, but with some very good bits...
