What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Kuma, I did not know that (or it's been so long I just may have forgotten).  I also see now that Ivan Moravec was also part of that soundtrack.  Very interesting.....

Finally the Brendel performance that I like!

Ironically compared to my favourite Argerich/Barakovsky Op.54, a bit *girly* but this is expressively done.

Bought it strictly for the cover art. :x( probably Steinweiss design )

I still prefer his later Op.54 with Ansermet.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Italian Concerto in F major BWV971

Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue in D minor BWV903

Partita in B minor BWV831

Duet in E minor BWV802

Scott Ross (March 1, 1951 – June 13, 1989)

This guy could really play the harpsicord well, very interesting bloke too.

He died of AIDS age just 38 : (

[A little snip from wiki...]

Ross dressed in similar fashion to his students (even in performance), and his 'granny' spectacles appeared to align him more with the popular music icon John Lennon than the authentic performance scholar Gustas Leonhardt. For one concert at Université Laval that was attended by the university chancellor and the French Consul General he wore jeans and a red lumberjack shirt. Self-effacing to a fault, he explained, "I started the Goldbergs 'cause I quit smoking and, to keep one's fingers busy, it's better than knitting".

Cool eh? : )

 On CD

This is on my list of my favorite albums of all time. The songs in the collection have lost little relevance, if any at all. Of course, the timeless "San Francisco" is the featuring track on the collection, but listen to what Scott does with John Phillips' "Twelve-Thirty", which went on to be a hit record for Phillips' own group, "The Mamas And Papas". Other songs of the period, like John Sebastian's "It's Not Time Now" and Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" only add pleasure to the listening. An absolute joy to listen to, forty years after its initial release.

Thank you Scott RIP.

On CD

I had never heard of the Dropkick Murphy's before I saw the film but I now have several of their albums and can recommend them to anyone who enjoys anarchic Irish/American rock. Also love the Van Morrison version of Comfortably Numb.

She obviously had one positive aspect Stu, a good taste in music. My ex bitch, sorry, ex wife, got one of her friends husbands in to sell the records I couldn't take with me when I left at a car boot. There were a few hundred but nothing of great value. All of the good stuff was safely taken before. Suffice to say the friends husband in question got payback later.

In the whole scheme of things it's not important and I'm sure, like me, you're much happier now.
