What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Superb energetic and emotional  electronica - Clark is a genious..

Another masterpiece - one of the albums that started it all - minimalistic electronica recorded 15 years before the early digital samplers exisited in their DIY recording studio in Dusseldorf - under the guiding hand of co-producer Conny Plank

Was a fine guitarist.

Antonín Dvorák:  Schubert Ensemble

Quintet for Piano and Strings no 2 in A major, Op. 81/B 155

Quartet for Piano and Strings no 2 in E flat major, Op. 87/B 162

Zigeunermelodien (7), Op. 55: no 4, Als die alte Mutter

Frédéric Chopin:  Janina Fialkowska

For her second Chopin recital, Fialkowska gives a nice selection of Waltzes, a Polonaise, a Ballade, Preludes, a Nocturne, Mazurkas, a Scherzo, and the Fantasy.

Very sensitive and sensible playing.

Sergei Rachmaninov:  Xiayin Wang

Variations on a theme of Corelli, Op. 42

Moments musicaux (6), Op. 16

Etudes-tableaux (9) for Piano, Op. 33

Rachmaninov, in the league of quintessential composers, from Bach to Prokofiev, who intuitively understand how to convey human emotion through music in a way words could never do.  Quite a nice recording.

Beethoven concertos 1&2, by Radu Lupu and the Israel Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Lupu's pianism is characterised by a subtle, effortless charm and plain-spoken beauty, and a dynamic range that isn't restricted as well as different from the norm: he rarely goes loud, but frequently dips to ppp without sacrificing fullness of tone or sounding timid.

These concerti are excellent examples of his art: Lupu isn't after the thrill of the moment, and takes his andantes really slow, but doesn't bore for a second, no matter how well you know these works (and I've had his recording of #2 and #4 for over 20 years now).

Lupu will be playing the Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1 with Muti/CSO next season.

I might just go see him play.

New 2012 Steve Wilson remix of this classic - the sound quality is fantastic.

There are 3 bonus tracks ... 2 of which I'd not heard before and I can understand why they don't belong on Tarkus ... might have been ELP's abortive Eurovision entry. However, the tracks we all know and love are superb. This leaves the Steve Hoffman effort, which was good, in the shade.

This is surely one of the best Tarki.
