What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

OK. Debs,
Will join you with a more recent performance. Ragna Schirmer came out lately with a three discs recording of Handel suites for keyboard which is really outstanding.
Hi Haim,
I like Haydn’s piano sonata compositions and find them a half-way house between Mozart and Beethoven, although unlike most of Beethoven’s piano, these can be played and sound great on a well tempered harpsichord, and unlike the beautiful Mozart they are more engaging somehow.
Walter Olbertz plays to my liking, I don’t know much about the chap [b1931- and think he’s still alive] but reading the small print in the booklet one can see many different recording dates which suggests he may have taken time to carefully practise small amounts of these works for the many recording venues. The sound recording is fantastic for the era, and allows a feel of emotion for these works which imho can be less forgiving on piano than a harpsichord.
Although I know there is room for more emotion this may require a well thought out modern recording and a non-fudging fingered pianist [such as Angela Hewitt] to ring out some more charm.
Thank you for the Ragna Schirmer recommendation, now noted within my wish-list : )

The Jupiter.
As I'm working my way through the box, I'm finding a lot to like. The interpretations are 'old fashioned' bigband for sure, but as so often, the cliche that this leads to muddled textures and a soup of sound doesn't hold up. Instead, textures are lucid, instrument groups nicely play off of each other, and Krips keeps things together well.

EJ,
I've got his Mozart's last 6 symphonies on vinyl box set and I've got the feeling that he was just having a great time with it.
He does have a tendency to be a tad slowish but I find him do better on Mozart pieces than Beethoven symphonies in spite the latter is available on Audiophile Everest recordings.

For only-Early-Music-lovers - simply bad.
For all others - brilliant.

Well, for my first dip into Mozart's symphonies, he's proving to be a convincing advocate for this music! I may look further into other recordings to get my bearings, but won't be surprised if this is the set I will keep returning to.

Ben Howard, Every Kingdom on CD. Stunning debut album, beautifully recorded.
Kuma,
How is Aimard with Beethoven? The only (very good) performance of his I have is a Messiaen disc of Preludes and Etudes.

Saw him on Later with Jules Holland and he was great but hadn't heard much about the album. I think I'll be getting this one soon. Thanks.
