What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

+1 Gary, very good singer/songwriter.

Chords, for myself, I enjoyed this well recorded album very much.  I have a lot to learn though, in regards to early music, before I could judge it further from the perspective of an informed opinion.  I have put many of the examples you post in my Wish List though and am slowly opening up this world.

EJ, yes, and if I recall correctly, it was you that put it in my Wish List a long time ago!  Only my first listen but Alexeev strikes me as a very straight forward, no nonsense player with Rachmaninov.  Everything has a nice shape and colour to it without being melodramatic in any way.

Earlier this morning:

Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, Ragna Schirmer

Posted on: 02 September 2012 by Tony2011

Posted on: 02 September 2012 by Florestan

Working my way through this set with Disc 4 this morning:

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Gustav Leonhardt  or Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Meine Seel' erhebt den Herren, BWV 10

Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen, BWV 11 "Ascension Oratorio"

Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12

Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen being a long time favourite theme of mine.  Now I can laugh about it but I remember about 20 years ago going in a music store seeking out the score for the Franz Liszt piano transcriptions (he has two) on this theme, so I could learn/experience this treasure on the piano and for myself.  The young, inexperienced girl had no clue as to what I what I was after or what this meant in English.  I kept repeating "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" to her and then she suddenly broke out laughing.  I guess it sounded very funny to her.  Oh the irony.

This CD was recommended on the recent ‘Woman Vocals – suggestions’ topic. I have had it for a few days and it is rather beautiful. Sara Isaksson & Rebecka Tornqvist are Swedish and originally released this collection in 2006. These are all pleasant, spare, piano-driven covers of some of the best songs in Steely Dan's classic catalogue.

1.Rose Darling

2.Barrytown.

3.Gaucho.

4.Green Earrings.

5.Your Gold Teeth.

6.Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me).

7.Don't Take Me Alive.

8.Josie.

9.Do it Again.

10.Fire In The Hole.

11.Pearl of The Quarter.

12.Midnight Cruiser.

Alt J Awesome Wave

Title sums it up in a quirky fresh wavy sort of way - maybe a barbershop quartet on DMA

You will find miracles I am sure.

Be careful Early Music records before ca.1995.

'Mainstream' after 2000 is very-very good and getting better.

'Harnoncourt's children' (means the new generation of the new-style EM performance) are completly ready; the standard is extremly high.

Just taste what pupils came from Basel school.

Book 6 of Monteverdi's madrigals. Book 6 is about the despair and sorrow associated with death, the saddest and most beautiful of Monteverdi's song collections. Amazing music, even after 400 years.
