What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Chords, I saw you post the wonderful Savall performance. In case you don't know the Alessandrini performance, it makes a great comparison.

I know it quite well; really excellent record.

Fresh, airy and full of OVPP advantages. Fireside and direct; tempo is faster as usual nowadays. Wind-section: outstanding;  delivered a very suggesting 'ease-feeling' on all record. Singers are very good.

But.

Savall's approaching is full of miracle; goosebumps coming without known reason; I saw eyes swimming with tears in my room listening this Vespro; all performance is in a festive mood enormously. And not romantic-slobber-going-to-pieces way.

Singers have a really brilliant voices; when M. Figueras sings at lower octave with a light quaver on her voice - you will remember it forever.

And choir used a very special stagecraft: entries and finishings happened not exactly all-voices-together; it makes a very strange feeling - Naim set is ultrasensitive in this area.

Another excellent Vespro.

Fortunately the field is very OK.

Brigitte Fassbaender recorded Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin in 1993, quite late in her career. A heart-rending performance, one of her best records.

Early European wedding motets, played with style and subtlety by Weser Renaissance.

Gulda/Harnoncourt: Mozart Piano Concerto No.26 & 23.

I've discovered Gulda today. How wonderful! He's very good on these Mozart pieces.

Coronation isn't one of my fave, but he's making me listen up. He must be doing something right.

La Sera - Sees the Light

Hi TWP,

I really like it.   First heard a track on one of the local college stations.  I wound up ordering her first album after listening to this one.

Hope you enjoy it!

Best regards,

Pat

On CD.

After two accomplished Indie albums in 1986 and 1989 ("The Jayhawks" and "Blue Earth"), The Jayhawks finally made everyone sit up and take notice with their stunning 1992 breakthrough Americana effort "Hollywood Town Hall". Forging a rootsy sound that wasn't quite rock or country - "Hank Williams on speed" somebody once memorably called it -…

Well remembered!

Strange coincidence with Gaucho - I picked up the SACD for a couple of quid at the weekend. I don't even have an SACD player, but the CD layer plays well.

Back to the topic:

Joni - Blue, Court and Spark and Hejira. First two are timeless classics & Hejira because I wanted to hear Jaco Pastorius' bass via the Uniti.

Karine Polwart's new CD "Traces" from a recommendation elsewhere on this forum.

High res download of Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" from the *inn site. Revelatory compared to my battered vinyl copy.
