What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi George,

What is the Prom of 2012?

BBC Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concert season, founded more than a century ago by Wood, and run by the BBC since about 1930.

Beethoven's first and second concertos, from Brendel's third set. Rattle supports with his brand of fusion big-band/HIP cooking, meaning brisk and slightly exaggerated tempi, clipped phrasings, and beautiful sounds. Brendel is great - this must be a challenging backdrop, but he never appears stressed or rushed, playing off of the orchestra's swells, and coming into his own in the cadenzas. Beautiful recording, too.

Conventional wisdom is that Brendel's cycle with Levine is to be preferred. Brendel may have been nimbler in those days, but as a whole, to me that one sounds stodgy and congested compared to this.

One track - one feeling.

Words based on Wittgeinstein's works especially 'Philosophical Investigations' (1953)

CD is a private edition; sound quality is BRILLIANT; one of the best human voice reproduction I've ever heard.

Tune is very harmonics; words - not an easy-cake.

Anyone here ever heard of this album?

I hardly ever play it, but thought I'd give it a spin for a change this AM.

Schmelzer, centered in Austria, published in 1664 six solo sonatas for violin—the first non-Italian to do so. Schmelzer had assumed the post as Hofkappelmeister in Austria, beginning a new trend of native musicians replacing the Italian imports which had previously been preferred at the Austrian court. Having already written works for string ensemble, these solo sonatas probably served the composer for his own use before publication.

Thanks. Apparently not as well publicized on this side of the pond.

Dear Matt,

I think we miss a trick or two in the UK with publicity! I bet it would easier to know about it in the countries that form what is called the British Commonwealth, by now!

If you can get the BBC [internet] iplayer then you may be able to listen to it again for a week ...

Actually as a patriotic party maybe it is not that interesting, but there was some great music making. A lovely performance of the Bruch G Minor Violin Concerto in the first half, and the usual party games in the second half, but for once tinged with a certain depth as it was the BBC Symphony Orchestra's last concert under their current excellent cheif conductor who is Czech. There was genuine warmth on his part toward the Orchestra and the audience, and on the part of the audience toward himself.

One of those one off times when the atmosphere was more than just Rule Britannia, Land Of Hope And Glory, and Jerusalem, and so on ...

People check this album and band out.

Just heard a interview with them on the Huey show and a couple of tracks from the album.

She has a great voice.

They are playing the Borderline in London tomorrow.
