What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

On Japanese 1980s vinyl pressing; YTIGC is surely one of the most underrated Zep songs.

Superb it is too.
Lovely quiet music by a ( nearly) contemporary composer

Renée Fleming in an all-star cast of Strauss' Rosenkavalier. I thought this was the soundtrack to the DVD that was earlier released, but it seems to sound significantly better - the box mentioned that the performance was 're-edited'. A bit of a halfway house approach: no substitute for a well balanced studio recording, but better than simply dumping the audio track on a CD.
Cheers,
EJ
Having listened to the entire work, I have to say that I love the performance, especially from Fleming and Thielemann. I am unfamiliar with the opera, but this strikes me as the most accessible of R. Strauss' operas.
What Decca has done with the recording is quite miraculous. The sound stage is not ideal, and it's quite clear that the recording derived from a staged performance. However, the sound quality is rather excellent, and all audience noise has been edited out. In the absence of studio recordings, this is a quite acceptable alternative.
Cheers,
EJ
First spin.

Molice - Dr Ray
Vol.2 of Isabelle Faust's recording of Bach's works for solo violin follows some two years after vol.1. These works allow an enormous amount of freedom for the interpreter. Faust's approach is by and large rhythmic and melodious (a bit more so than in Vol.1), but in a spicy and varied way. Among other recent performances, Faust is less romantic than Hélène Schmitt (her version is a must-hear, on the Alpha label), and more profound than Mullova (Onyx). Brilliant.

Music of Georgi Lvovich Catoire (1861-1926), recorded in 1998.
'Superlative. Immaculately and sensitively performed. Sound and presentation are superb. It would be hard to imagine one of music's most neglected byways illuminated with more pianistic ease and affection' (Gramophone)
