What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Claude Debussy: Preludes Books 1 & 2

Pierre-Laurent Aimard

I like Aimard as a pianist so I have no difficulty enjoying his recordings, including this one.  My usual complaint with 80% of my recordings usually tends to be with the sound quality.  Other than instrument / venue choice, most of this variance is attributed to the "house" sound of the label and then the individual recording engineer/producer etc. Then again maybe my replay equipment is so variable from day to day and I have to wonder why.  I listened to this last night on my Naim and wasn't impressed and this morning through i-Tunes and didn't experience the same "fuzziness" or unfocused nature in the sound.  I haven't powered done for years, so I think I'm due for some maintenance.  I hope this fixes my woes?

Doug,

I have a similar experience with photography, getting at times tired of over-saturated and razor sharp images. My remedy is always to start shooting with a wide open lens introducing soft  unfocused areas for a calming effect. Perhaps our sound systems should have an aperture control dial as well.

Do you like Aimard's  preludes better than Bavouzet?

Haim,

I'll have to spend some time today again with Bavouzet.  It is maybe 6 months since I last listened to his Preludes.  Initial reaction though is that Bavouzet is a tough one to beat.  I think he certainly was recorded better, if my memory isn't faulty.

Interesting analogy you raise though.  In photography, as well as music, I simply want it to look natural and in music, the sound as close to the real thing as possible.  It could be that in this case the DGG engineers view Debussy with a blurred landscape using f/1.4 whereas Bavouzet is more f/2.8 and slightly less boket?

Hmmm also feel like Debussy's preludes. Pollini's very good.

Doug,

I feel that with Bavouzet's modern recording and the older Michalengeli I am pretty covered. My only slight temptation would be the recent release of Lubimov on ECM:

First play and enjoyed the songwriting, harmonies and musicianship. Produced by John Porter, who like the band are from Leeds, have made an impression stateside. I'll try and see them ASAP.
