What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The Best Live Band In The World Ever.Stu.
On vinyl
11 by the Smithereens. Browsing through a record stall at a local car boot this morning, turned up this gem for a pound. Really surprised to find a little known New York rock band amongst boxes of Perry Como, Nat King Cole and Herb Alpert LP's.
Brahms Viola Sonatas op. 120
Schumann Märchenbilder

Hi Doug,
It's been a while since I saw Vogt come by, and I don't have a recording of the Fairy Tale Pictures. Care to share your thoughts on this disc?
Cheers,
EJ
EJ, this is a fairly good recording and I have little trouble enjoying it. My sense is that it is fairly even keeled; no highs, no lows. For the Schumann, I have too many to compare to but another nice recording that is similar is from the Nash Ensemble with a full disc of his Chamber music.
I'm way behind on Lars Vogt recordings and I have a lot of catching up to do though. The bulk of his recordings seem to favour chamber music recordings and that just perfect for me. I see dozens upon dozens of wonderful chamber music recordings in my future! I've just been reading up on his music festival Spannungen and another one he has been involved with, the Klavier-Festival Ruhr and considering myself an utter failure at having any skill at winning any lottery to support my musical ambitions. My dream would be to spend every summer in Germany for the rest of my life and attend the endless choice of music possibilities there.
Regards,
Doug

I like him a lot better doing Schubert than Beethoven.

Going to see Paul Lewis do D.958, 959 and 960 this Sunday, in Rotterdam

oh wow that's nice, EJ.
Is it a big venue?
Change of weather around here makes me want to listen to Schubert more.

Kuma,
First half of my post didn't make it - wanted to say that Andsnes' Schubert run is pretty special, he recorded the three final sonatas, one earlier sonata and Winterreise with Bostridge.
Lewis is also very good, I heard him play the impromprus and the fantasia live last year and was bowled over. What sometimes doesn't come across on disc very clearly, is how muscular his playing is (and since I'd heard it, I can hear it in his recordings as well). I don't know his recordings of 958 - 960 but his fantasia is about to be released, and if it only partly captures the atmosphere of the live event, it's a must-have.

Doug,
Thanks. After his hyped up Beethoven 1 & 2, which I felt were not that special, he dropped off my radar - but looking back, he surrounded himself with some very good company for his chamber music discs, so who knows.
Thanks for the heads-up on the Nash disc - it's a no brainer!
Cheers,
EJ

Newly released
Gomez - Bring It On
Great album, should have brought it on years ago!
Original vinyl. 1970 Pink label Island. Another album from the vaults I haven't played for many years. Psychedelic prog on a background of eastern promise. Great guitar solos.

Hi Stu,
Was not familiar with this work. The samples sound promising. Into the queue! Thanks.
