What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Here's a funny record: Brendel plays the music you'd least likely associate with him, and not sounding half bad at it.
Cheers,
EJ
Nikolai Lugansky plays a varied Liszt recital. Very accomplished technically, and a huge dynamic range. I'd love to hear him do a complete Prokofiev sonata series!

Nice one Graham. I can't seem to keep JH's 'Perfectly Good Guitar' out of my shiny beer-mat spinner of late.

On CD:-
great album,great live
This one on vinyl,well worth a listen,english groove !
could only find on cd,this guy tells a great story, with no holes barred, this has got to be one of the best for this year,
Original Blue Vinyl. Listening to this and Let It Be, again on 1st press vinyl makes me realise I don't need the postulated Beatles remastered (probably digitally f*cked up) vinyl reissues. The SQ on these LPs cannot be bettered.

What are your thoughts of Schiff's second go at the WTC?
A nice assortment from Haendel, Telemann, Buxtehude, Mattheson, Boehm, Weckmann, Scheidemann to Pauset. Andreas Staier playing the harpsichord of Hieronymus Albrecht Hass.
Johann Sebastian Bach: Tanya Tomkins (Baroque Cellos)
Suite for Cello solo no 1 in G major, BWV 1007
Suite for Cello solo no 2 in D minor, BWV 1008
Suite for Cello solo no 3 in C major, BWV 1009
Suite for Cello solo no 4 in E flat major, BWV 1010
Suite for Cello solo no 5 in C minor, BWV 1011
Suite for Cello solo no 6 in D major, BWV 1012
I am very happy with this recording. It is about the right tempo for me which means it may be too slow for the majority of the population. The music making is there in spades though, me thinks.
Kuma,
First half of my post didn't make it - wanted to say that Andsnes' Schubert run is pretty special, he recorded the three final sonatas, one earlier sonata and Winterreise with Bostridge.
Lewis is also very good, I heard him play the impromprus and the fantasia live last year and was bowled over. What sometimes doesn't come across on disc very clearly, is how muscular his playing is (and since I'd heard it, I can hear it in his recordings as well). I don't know his recordings of 958 - 960 but his fantasia is about to be released, and if it only partly captures the atmosphere of the live event, it's a must-have.
EJ,
You are right. I love the mood they create together and Andsnes seems to be more at home with Schubert program. For sure I will get the rest and try their 'Winterreise'.
About Lewis being muscular: It was pretty apparent on the CD for me as up till then most of the Schubet I have been listening to were sort of *pansy* stream of consciousness. :x So comparatively Lewis came on like a 'he-man' for sure.
I suppose that's probably a conventional approach for interpretation given the composer's personality from what I have read. ( less confident, more modest and rather shy young man )
I quite like Lewis' Schubert CD except when I have heard the 'Unfinished' back to back with Richter, I still get the chill when I hear his open ended *silent* finish. Now that's a skill! I would like to hear his D960.
btw, I just finished listening to Schnabel's D960.
Good God this one had a quite an effect on me and almost suicidal Andante. Schnabel digging deep for soul searching. It's a 1939 recording so has a high noise floor but this performance transcends the bad fidelity. Plus old recording comes off much better on vinyl than run-of-the-mill historical CD reissues. ( EMI Testament excluded )

On the whole I do like his current approach, it suits me better.
there are some rhythmicaly strange/unfamiliar passages, not being a musician myself and not being familiar with the score, I'll have to discus those with my wife to see what he is doing there.
