What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Sophie Hunger - The Danger of Light; very difficult to pigeon hole. Probably sits somewhere between folk, rock and jazz. Needs another few listens, but she always seems to have something to say.

The famous 'Les Baricades Misterieuses'; written 'style brisé' (broken style), published 1717.

There is absolutely no direct evidence to illuminate the meaning of Couperin's title. Anything offered as an interpretation is more or less well-founded speculation.

Count your blessings: it could be Justin Beiber

On Original Vinyl.

Harvey Mandel. Blues rock guitarist. It is not really a blues record, though - more rock/jazz/funk. Its eight tracks are all instrumental, with plenty of blistering lead guitar.

One of Kaufmann's first records, with just about the perfect tenor programme for him. His voice is unique, we haven't had a tenor of this quality for a long time - his timbre recalls Vickers, and sometimes he approaches the young Jose Carreras for beauty of sound. That said, he sings it all a bit samey, here, with little coloring and a generic intensity not unlike Placido Domingo in his younger days. Taken in small doses, a very good recording.

Cheers,

One of the best Bach cantata discs I have heard so far.

Original vinyl 'Elektra Red Label' 1969.

The sadly deceased David Ackles had a rich brown baritone with a husky frailty to it as well as a bitter strength that comes through most obviously on his `social comment` songs. If you like Randy Newman or Nick Cave or Tom Waits or, more to the point perhaps, Jacques Brel, then you should appreciate this ever-undervalued singer-songwriter - who also played piano like a dream. Also worth a look are David's first LP and his third - the epic "American Gothic".

Recreation of ELO classics ... with a catalogue like ELO, Jeff's only problem would be selecting the right tracks to include - Eldorado complete would have worked for me, of course - but Jeff has done a stonking job on this set. ELO remain my favourite orchestra and probably always will.

Original '1974' Vinyl.

I discovered this album by pure chance. In the seventies, I was thumbing through the LP's (that's what they used to be called), in my local record shop. Yes, they also used to be called records.
Anyway, I came across this album cover depicting what looked like an invasion of Earth, with a darkened figure carrying a women, presumably back to his space ship. I bought the album purely on that basis, having never heard of the group, or their music. It's difficult to put the music into a category, but the nearest would be psychcedelic synthesised rock! One of the highlights on this album is the awesome guitar work from Michael "Jeep" Willis, the solo's on "Neon Man" are breathtaking.

Guy,

Did you buy the vinyl or CD or both?

Have you ordered his new solo LW album?

You have to get the set up right.

Varnishing the cardboard helps.
