What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Guy,

Did you buy the vinyl or CD or both?

Have you ordered his new solo LW album?

Stu.

'Twas listening to it on a USB stick of unknown origin, but have the vinyl (what else) on order. I only use digital because I have to ... Karine Polwart, for instance, doesn't do vinyl  ... mind you it is convenient in the office. I even like taking the vinyl out of the plastic sleeve to play it . I'm getting old and totally bewildered by Naim digital streamers.

I'm not convinced I'd like Long Wave, it is lots of cover versions; it has even got a cover of a Charles Asnovoice song. I'm not keen on 50s romantic ballads or rock n roll as they are just not Peter Hammill enough for me.

I'm still playing Paul Jewell and the Missing Back Four recordings, but not really enjoying it.

We are fortunate that Tharaud's constant stiffness in front of the camera never spills into his piano playing.

Haim, the word on the street is that he will be nominally more bendy on his new release, "Le Boeuf Sur le Toit-Swinging Paris" but only after some help from photoshop which rotated him at the hips by -23º.

Another superb pop album by The Choir. This by the way is their 14th album.

Playing the new Choir disc and loving so much made me pull out another of their older discs.

These albums have been my listening pleasure last night and this morning.

Original 'Probe' Vinyl.

Thomas Jefferson Kyne was a musician, songwriter and producer. Responsible for a number of classic pop records, including, the Mysterians' "96 Tears," the Shirelles "Soldier Boy," and Loudon Wainwrights III “Dead Skunk”. He also produced albums for Mike Bloomfield, Dr John, John Hammond and Gene Clark. In 1973, he recorded this first, solo record. Which has a strong Steely Dan connection. The album includes Donald Fagan, Walter Becker, Jeff ‘Skunk Baxter and David Palmer. The albums producer Gary Katz contributes to backing vocals on the track “Collection Box”. Rick Derringer also plays electric & acoustic guitar. He died in 1994 of an overdose.

My first acquaintance with Chopin's sonatas was via this disc. Uchida is especially good in #2, where her clarity of line and ideally balanced left and right hands adds a purpose to a sonata which often seems a disjointed collection of movements. Her #3 is cut from the same cloth, but here the competition is much fiercer.

Cheers,

EJ
