What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

On Original Vinyl 'Epic 1970'

Spirit's finest hour ? This album oozes class as genres such as rock, folk, soul and jazz are fused together to produce a sublime funky, rocking, masterpiece IMO.

Graham.

Great album Graham although their first album takes some beating. I just love Fresh Garbage.

Kevin,

Also a great album. Bobby Gentry has to be one of my favourite female singers.

Fine British Blues. Chris Youlden's smouldering vocals are a treat. A relaxing blues album and less Blues Rock than most of their other albums.

Hi Steve. I love the cover . Do you have much SB in your wonderful vinyl collection? As they seemed to be an a much underrated band IMO.

Regards Graham.

Yes, she was a fox. And, more importantly absolutely and completely brilliant. Wrote most of her own material, also produced a lot of it as well. I've just listened to this on vinyl, which is another one of her great albums:

Steve she's one of mine too - great singer, songwriter and storyteller. At least two of her albums are out and out masterpieces and cannot be recommended highly enough:

Followed by Best of ELO CD.

Great.  Thanks for the tip.  I've made a mental note to look for her work on Amazon and at the used vinyl store up the street from me.  I have "Ode to Billie Joe" on a billboard compilation CD, but I always like getting an artist's full album rather than compilations or Greatest Hits packages.  Thanks again.

The best ones IMO are (in order of greatness)

1. Touch 'Em With Love

2. The Delta Sweete

3. Fancy

4. Way Down South

5. Ode to Billie Joe

6. Local Gentry

7. Patchwork

8. Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell

You can pick them up fairly easily on vinyl if you enjoy looking around. Generally I prefer the UK pressings (where available) to US ones.

On BBC iPlayer ELO from Wembley 1978 fabulous video of a fabulous concert.

I was going to get the Jeff Lynne re-recordings of ELO songs but was put off by many very negative reviews on Amazon.

Anyone want to comment on  these "new" versions?

Hi Graham,

I have all their early albums from Shake Down to Street Corner Talking. The early albums with Chris Youlden on vocals are the best period for me and this is probably my favourite. They were quite big on the college circuit in the late '60s early '70s. I didn't see them as a student in London but did catch them in Plymouth when I was about 14.
