What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

On his Sound Of The City series of compilation CDs, esteemed writer and broadcaster Charlie Gillett draws together the diverse music of the cities that shaped the course of American music. It's such a simple idea and he has executed it brilliantly. A staggering musical feast that spans some 40/50 years. The series takes American cities and via the selection of relevant tracks shows how music has evolved there in the post-war period. If you can find this set or individually at a decent price it's worth picking up.

"I like the artwork on those too Graham"

Hi Kevin.

These 2CD sets are now getting relatively expensive. However you have the opportunity to dip into and taste music that would take you a lifetime to collect. All the CDs are beautifully packaged as you can see with great illustrations and an informative essay, ‘just wish they had been released on vinyl for the artwork alone”. They cover ever genre of modern American music from the 40/50 years, jazz, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, soul etc, you will probably also get a few tracks which you wouldn't have thought of buying but you never know, they may be worth having. Be it an old favourite or a previously unheard of group, you're likely to find something of interest on this fabulous collection. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hmm... money's a bit tight at the moment - but I think I will give a couple of them a go. New Orleans and Chicago would be my preferences... unless you have any recommendations?

Early symphonies of a promising teenager, I think this young man will go far.

All short n sweet but very well crafted into beautiful masterpieces, and underplayed these days imho : )
