What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Von Weber / trio for piano, flute and cello & piano quartet / Kremerata Musica

One from the archives. Weber wrote some nice music - sounding ahead of his time occasionally even in comparison with his contemporary Beethoven, but it's all a bit forgettable. Still, this disc gets an occasional airing for its novelty value.

Cheers,

Frédéric François Chopin (1810-1849)

On this day in history....

17th October 1849: Chopin dies in Paris,

age 39 after living most of his life with poor health.

It's not known for sure what he died from but likely he suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis.

I can feel a piano sonata no.2 coming on : (

Still on a bit of a Factory trip. On vinyl - a stone cold classic from 1984.

A Factory Quartet (FACT 24) from early '81 - double album of Durutti Column, Kevin Hewick, Blurt and The Royal Family & The Poor. The DC side is brilliant, the rest is of variable quality.

"In the kingdom of consumption, the citizen is king". Indeed.

Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia

Keystone Companions: The Complete 1973 Fantasy Recordings

I still have my double vinyl of the original album and the 3 CDs that were released. This remastered box set combines all the original material. Nice packaging as well!

I've never heard this recording.  Worthwhile purchase for a Jerry fan?

Pat

"Brotherhood" by New Order on Japanese vinyl - their most underrated album IMO. Second side is fantastic.
