What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

On Vinyl.

Robert's new album was produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Aerosmith, the Black Crowes) in just two weeks but don't expect either raw blues or heavy rock. Robert does what he has always done, beautifully-crafted, laid-back soul blues but Shirley does add big band accompaniment on "I'll Always Remember You" and  strings to "I'm Done Cryin'". This is a beautifully produced album.

Graham.

His best studio album for sometime.

Trout Mask Replica is getting one of its regular airings.

Luvly

Why would anyone be interested?

I'm sure they're not.

A great album cover:

And a better album musically...every cut is good:

I can't remember who on this forum caused me to look in Mandel's direction, but I thank you.  One of the great values of the Naim forum is discovering new & different music you haven't heard (of) before!

Beethoven / concertos #2 & 3 / Kovacevich, Australian Chamber Orchestra (1989)

Kovacevich made these recordings around the time he worked on the Brahms I with Wolfgang Sawallisch. Why he, or EMI, would have chosen the Australian for his second Beethoven concerto cycle I don't know, but these Beethoven discs would have been top tier with a better orchestra. In any case, Kovacevich frequently takes wing and displays an authority that goes beyond his earlier readings with Davis.

The records were originally issued under EMI's Eminence / Classics for Pleasure budget label, another strange move for a company with big plans for this pianist. Cheap cover aside, the sound is excellent.

Cheers,

EJ

That would be me DrMark.  Glad you are enjoying HM. Total agree regarding the 'Shangreade' cover you could also try to get hold of a copy of Harvey's ' Games Guitars Play' not sure if it was ever been released on CD. All my albums are on original vinyl, but  pretty sure you will be able to track it down somewhere good luck.

 Regards Graham.

Very special record; Marco Beasley's tenor is outstanding.

Highly recommended.

On original vinyl.

I love this album. For anyone who has listened to and enjoyed other Lloyd Cole albums I can't recommend this one too highly.

Original 60's vinyl.

Though some only know The Byrds for their covers, they are amongst the most important and influential bands of the 1960s.This album was a labour of love, though; it's more experimental and progressive than their previous works it is one of the best they made, Imo.

What's wrong with that cover Florestan? No need to defend it...

Kevin, I'm just nitpicking (which is one of my better attributes) but something doesn't quite sit right to my eye visually.  Personal opinion, as what do I know but in my mind, a change of angles might have produced a better result for me; her shoulders seem too square to the plane of the image maybe?

So no, we aren't putting this one on your favourite Classical Music Album Covers thread despite that this one is leagues ahead of the Beethoven album with two busts covering two busts. No comparison, that one is definitely worse, IMHO

Chopin: The Complete Polonaise, 16 Waltzes - Adam Harasiewicz

This is my first listen to Adam Harasiewicz and I definitely will be trying to get all of his recordings now but probably the Nocturnes next.  Strikes me as like those of his generation who weren't in a hurry to catch the next trolley.  I like those who take time to make music and offer more of a concentration on producing a beautiful and pleasing tone.

Harasiewicz was born in Chodziez, Poland and was the first prize winner at the 1955 International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition.

Chopin: Nocturnes, Sonata in b-flat minor, Etudes Op. 10 & 25 - Guiomar Novaes

Brazilian pianist, Guiomar Novaes is another Chopin specialist which I am first starting to listen to.

Harasiewicz is my favourite Chopin interpreter for just all those reasons.

Are you familiar with his Decca 10 CD box of the complete works of Chopin?
