What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011
With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

Really 'breaking news' category in Early Music.
I think it's the best Ockeghem record ever made. Be careful; takes strong mesmeric effect...
Naims sound here is simply unbeliavable.
Pergolesi: Stabat Mater w/ Anna Prohaska adn Bernard Fink
Very good record.
May I recommend you an another approache?
Not very easy to get it but I am sure you will collapse after listening
Chords,
I'm so far behind simply because I am so busy trying to find all the great music you listen to and getting it on my wishlists. This one is proving to be a challenge to find.....
Anyone managed to find a source on CD?
I've bought this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PERGOL...;hash=item1c23593ed5
If somebody can not live without it, just contact me; a HQ copy is avaiable for members of course.
I couldn't find this anywhere - not even on e-Bay (UK)! Is it really so superior to the Harmonia Mundi recording? Any opinions on the Alpha and Floreligium recordings???

Grateful Dead ~ Europe '72 #17 Studio du Grand Theatre de la ville de Luxembourg, Luxembourg (5/16/1972)
2 CD set
Part of the Europe '72 complete recordings. I didn't purchase the whole set, just a handful.

This one is far-far better.
By my taste of course.
Florilegium's one is not my way.
Alpha's one is very good; quite another approach; Dumestre shows the real Napolitan musical circumstances at that time.
There is an outstanding Tarantella and other tunes by Pino de Vittorio on it; Stabat Mater might have performed this way; and a wonderful children choir sings some lines.
Highly recommended too.
Vinyl (Factory Benelux, 1982)
On Silver
On vinyl, to set me up before I trot off to work...
Homework before seeing Lucy tonight in Cambridge. One of the many good young singers/bands I've seen or going to see this year.
My son picked this up for me on CD today for a squid.

Chords,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I'm not very knowledgeable about classical music and all pointers are gratefully received.
I'm particularly interested in the Stabat Mater after having heard a radio performance of it some years ago, before the great resources of the internet were available, and was struck by its beauty.
The Dantone/Accademia Bizantina recording is proving VERY hard to find, but the Dumestre one is relatively easy and at a reasonable price.
Thank you again,
Vlad

Music from Naples - again:

Tarantella used to be - basically - a forbidden dance. At the time of Cristoforo Caresana - end of 17.c. - The strict Grand Inquisition was only a strange memory; Tarantella could be found inside the churches as a popular Napolitan tune in the mass of Caresana.
Capella de Turchini - one of the best Early Music group specialized in the Napolitan music.
Highly recommended.
Why?
I'm sorry but Grateful Dead just sucked. Ok....the first 2 songs on this disc I enjoy. That's it out of all their stuff
