What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Since you appear also like chamber music, I can suggest Emmanuelle Bertrand a french cellist.

I have now 3 CD's by her and the two I like most are:

- Le Violoncelle Parle

- Ernest Bloch: Suites pour violoncelle

Both with the beautifull Harmonia Mundi recording quality

Aleg, thanks for the suggestions.  I really like Emmanuelle Bertrand and Pascal Amoyel too.  I have three CD's of them already (Saint-Saens, Grieg, Alkan/Liszt) but not these two.  I have put the Le Violoncelle Parle in my wish list now but in just looking briefly I could not find the Bloch.  I remember being interested in this one a few years ago but somehow it got missed when I bought the others.

Via the Grado's. Good performance of Mozart's last opera. Based on the at-the-time outdated form of the Opera Seria (this was the last opera to be written in this format), Tito lacks the immediacy of Nozze, Don Giovanni, Cosi or Zauberflote, although it rises to greatness in places.

Cheers,

EJ

Sorry, I missed the 'lovely' above.

This recording, in my opinion is an essential recording to own.  Brilliant playing, fresh interpretation and last but not least the recording is simply superb.  I own most of Stephen Hough's recordings on Hyperion and unfortunately I am mostly never pleased with the sound quality so this is a case where I am quite happy to jump up and down for it.

But then I am always nitpicking about something because I am fussy about what I want and for sure one attribute of music is still sound quality.  For example, Stephen Hough's other disc last year was Chopin's Waltzes.  In less than 5 seconds, I was already bothered by the quality of the piano used.  It turns out it is a Yamaha.  It probably does not matter since I am probably the one person on the face of the earth that this bothers.

As for the bomb shelters Haim, keep digging!  I'll send my eight year old son over your way and he can tell you when you need to head for cover.  It isn't very difficult to see that this is one of his favourite recordings that we listen to over and over recently.  It has an emotional effect on him and I only wish most listeners of music could experience something similar and so naturally (if they allowed themselves).  After-all, listening to music should excite both the intellectual as well as the emotional senses just as if we were a barometer.  Admittedly, the Liszt Piano Concertos would probably damage any barometer from flying back and forth from extreme and repeated low & high pressures.

Anyway, this is an electric recording with equal amounts of unabashed energy and passion which I cannot get enough of.

Absolutely 10/10 superb,

(however the libretto is only in German...

leaving me wondering what this opera is about.)

But who cares when the quality of the singing and music are so high : )

The 24bit/96khz remastering is perfection too.

I think the physical CD might be out of print now. I see it fetches over the top prices on Amazon Marketplace.

You can however download it in CD quality 44.1kHz/16-bit at Qobuz.com (at reduced priced as well this week)

http://www.qobuz.com/album/emm...1719822?qref=sre_1_1

For registration however, you do need a french postcode I believe, but that should be obtainable ;-).

Refreshingly different. Excellent recording SQ too.

Played the track 'The Night' many times, I know when the drum kicks - but it manages to cause a make the heart jump in my chest every time.

Moon Wiring Club, their two FACT mixes. Esoteric. Unlike a lot of things I post here, I actually think this would find an appreciative audience on this forum. A bit of humour and an eclectic approach to ambient and sampling.

Why not hop over to factmag . com and look at the track list. Even HFHB listeners might like it...
