What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Spent every spare hour the last few days listening to this 1991 recording of Mussorgsky's original version of Boris Godunov. A remarkable opera that combines a story about the Russian people with the personal ordeals of its cruel, but oddly sympathetic (in this opera) czar. The best Russian opera bar none, for me, and fortunately graced with many great recordings. This one, an essentially American recording with international cast and the exiled Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovitch at the helm, is a bit of an underdog, but well conducted and most importantly, with the Italian bass Ruggero Raimondi as the best Boris of the digital age. Sound is tolerable, spotlights the singers, but has a digital sheen that takes getting used to, not a patch on the Boris Christoff recordings from the 50s and 60s.

Cheers,

EJ

2 CD edition.  1 CD is a mono UK release (which I am listening to); the other a US stereo release.

The Band - Music From Big Pink

Hybrid SACD

Yes, I am still listening too and shamelessly plugging this album.

Bill Fay is one of English music's best kept secrets. At the dawn of the 1970s, he was a one-man song factory, with a piano that spilled liquid gold and a voice every bit the equal of Ray Davies, John Lennon, early Bowie, or Procol Harum's Gary Brooker. He made two solo albums but his contract wasn't renewed, which left his LPs and his reputation to become cult items. But he never stopped writing, the music kept on coming. Now, in his late sixties, he has produced Life Is People, a brand new studio album that shows his profoundly humanist vision is as strong as it ever was.

His debut on the underground Decca Nova label, Bill Fay (1970), included spacious big band jazz arrangements by Mike Gibbs, but it was the follow-up, Time Of The Last Persecution (1971), that cemented his reputation a harrowing, philosophical and painfully honest diagnosis of an unhealthy society and a messed-up planet, that featured the cream of London's fieriest jazz session players such as guitarist Ray Russell. Unable to make ends meet as a musician, Fay wandered through a succession of jobs for years, writing songs privately. Both solo albums were re-issued in 1998, and when the likes of Jeff Tweedy began singing his praises in the early 2000s, Bill began to come back into view and Wilco even convinced the shy singer to join them onstage in London in 2007.

Haven't really listened to this album since I got it in 2010, for no particular reason.  Now seems like a good time to for us to get acquainted.

This album arrived this week and has just blown me away. Junior Well's vocals are incredible, moving and confident. A young Buddy Guy accompanies Wells and shows his early mastery of electric blues guitar. This Chicago masterpiece, crackles with menace, Junior commands you to 'Snatch it Back and Hold It' at the opener before tearing it out of your hands and pushing it back in your face, this is a superb set where everything gels. Also, as if things couldn't get any better, the recording and SQ is awesome. I will be looking for some more from this label

(Steve J) ITS FANTASTIC.

Graham.

Graham,

Good choice. There are many great blues albums on this label. I used to go to Chicago for a conference annually and would visit Bob Koester in his shop and buy a number of Delmark albums. He would also advise me which Blues Clubs to go to in the evenings.

Check out the Magic Sam albums. They are very good.

Hi Pat,

I've not played the album much either, only bought this year though. The quality dropped I think from the previous 3 albums, probably affected by the fact that Carlos decided he was leaving after recording the album.

I've just bought Paul Banks solo and it's growing with each play. Some people have to suffer for their art, but I think Paul has been coping well for the last few years as his girlfriend is Helena Christensen, his photographer!

Hi Denis,

Thanks for that.  I don't follow the band that closely.  Also had no idea Paul put out a solo album. Appreciate the link; will be checking it out. Ah, I remember her from Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' video.

Best regards,

Pat
