What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Songs from the Road [VINYL]

Songs From the Road, collects 12 songs from shows on Leonard's world tour of 2008-09. Most of the material on this double album is different from that on the Live in London album. Avalanche, full band version of Chelsea Hotel, Heart With No Companion, That Don't Make It Junk, Waiting For The Miracle. Hopefully this will not his last live album.

Mozart / concertos 18 & 19 / Uchida, Tate (1989; original issue)

This was definitely not love at first listen, but over the years, the series of recordings that Mitsuko Uchida and Jeffrey Tate made in the late 80s have grown on me. Uchida, at first, seemed too prissy, careful, controlled, and bent on highlighting little figures, whereas Tate seemed content to provide laid back support, in kuma's terms, wallpaper. What I'm hearing now, however, are extremely well judged performances without a routine moment. And with the subtleness comes its own excitement. She doesn't replace Gulda or Brendel (with Marriner), but interestingly, when Brendel embarked on his mini series with Mackerras, his own approach had become much like Uchida's. Uchida's current ongoing cycle with the Cleveland orchestra, on the other hand, has more fire but also misses some of the love and care of the Tate cycle.

The works themselves are among the lesser known gems of Mozart's piano music.

Cheers,

EJ

Bargain! You're in for a treat.

Are any of these re-masters? How I wish there were in existence an "audiophile" version of Court and Spark.

What a load of absolute drivel and I am glad I didn't have to pay for a copy. How to murder an album. Avoid like the bubonic plague.

Girls vocals sound like Kasey Chambers and the album has that Lady Antebellum feel about it. Naff cover though. Not sure if it is coming out on cd but it isn't bad.

Going through a Listening to albums on a particular shelf phase, hence this evening,

Alas i have a greater understanding of some of the issues at play here than when i bought it in 1994. Haunting stuff.

OST with music by Pierce Turner. Only one for fans but unfortunately being criminally unknown there are not too many of us around.

I'm a sucker for ACE compilations and this (like many ACE genre compilations) has 1/3 really excellent, 1/3 worth the price of admission and 1/3 less than stellar. This SOUNDS great.
