What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Steve, I used to love this album back in 73 and the decades after , even  when I had no idea what SQ meant. Pardon the ignorance, but what will  DR to to It?

Respectfully,

Tony

Solo pour la flûte traversière: Barthold Kuijken

An outstanding album to match the wintery outside.

After the Brilliant 1st movement, Curzon seems to resort to more classic conservative ( read: stodgy and stately) style of playing in that it doesn't quite sustain my interest. The production value is high and this is the most polished, beautifully recorded and executed performance, so far however.

Glautando Köln: Katharina Hess, Susanne Hochscheid, Lucia Mense, Ursula Thelen

La Spiritata - Recorder music throughout the Centuries

Again, perfectly suitable music for a dark, wintery night.

Now I am getting somewhere!

Relaxed and not so ostentatious, more modern sounding down to earth rendition. Abbado's orchestration at times sounds a bit like a film score ( oddly so does his Brahms symphony No.1 ).

Pollini is technically precise yet keeping cool with a dash of friendly poise. He somehow, managed to bring this stately 'mess' down to more on a personal level. Comparatively, Pollini is more expressive than his usual albeit still speaking as second person. Very different style from Arrau's which is more outwardly passionate. The turbulent 3rd movement lacks a bit of weight but his lyrical rhythmic note delivery keeping score's grandeur without being heavy-handed.

Nice!

I am holding out for a vinyl copy.

I just ordered this tonight. Encouraged by Pollini above, maybe there is still a hope for this Concerto.

Time to start a separate thread on possibly my favorite work for piano and orchestra? The Zimerman/Rattle is absolutely brilliant, and his earlier effort with Bernstein isn't half bad either although not as fully realised as this one. Also, in case you haven't already, please make sure you get hold of Ashkenazy/Haitink: unexpectedly spectacular and probably my #1.

Cheers,

EJ
