What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Now just listening to It and there are some good tracks. I particularly like the last track, loving arms by a lady called Millie Jackson. What a lovely voice.

Not heard of her before, but she appears to have been around a Good while.

Checked her details on the web and discography says she has 49 albums.

Anyone here had previous experience of her music?

If so are there any particular albums to recommend of her music?

Paul

Hi Paul. I can recommend this album by Millie. Unfortunately it looks like it is only available on vinyl, which I know is not much good to you at the moment. However the reason for the recommendation is the fact that this is live album of Millie and I am sure you will be able to find a CD of Millie in concert which IMO is the only way to hear her at a fantastic best.

Or this not live but musically it is entrancing with its earthy soul/funk groove and outstanding arrangements and Millie’s voice enchants you in a way you will never have been moved before. To use a cliché it makes the hairs on your arms and neck stand on end.

Some information on Ms J. Mildred "Millie" Jackson (born July 15, 1944) is an American R&B/soul singer-songwriter Three of her albums have been certified gold by the RIAA  for over 500,000 copies. Born in Thomson, Georgia, the daughter of a sharecropper. Her mother died when she was a child and subsequently, she and her father moved to Newark, New Jersey. In 1974, she released the album Caught Up, which introduced her innovative style of raunchy rap. The featured release was her version of Luther Ingram's million-seller, "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right", for which she received two Grammy nominations.

Regards Graham.

PS I am a BIG FAN.

Thanks for the recommendation Graham, will check them out. I notice she also has an album called 21 with some of her best music (or so the ad said).

Have you heard that one at all?

Graham I see that caught up is shown as a 2000 album and there is also a same album remastered in 2006. Have you heard this and is it better or is the original better than the re mastered?

Paul, have not heard '21'. However I am not keen on remastered CDs IMO the original will have better SQ. As I said in my OP try to find a live MJ CD it will blow you away promise.

Graham.

Thanks again

EJ,

Cool. Looking foward to listening to it.
Will track down Ashkenazy/Haitink on vinyl.

Majestic and exciting. Very different from Brams' No.1 with more hummable melody line. I wonder this is about good as it gets for this boring piece of music.

Haven't heard the Ace set and not sure if the track was taken from her soul period but if you want to listen to her raunchy side listen to Caught Up and Still Caught Up. If you like them investigate some of the other Polydor discs.

J.S.Bach

First Lute Suite in E minor BWV 996

S.L. Wiess

Tombeau Sur la Mort de Mr. Comte de Logy

Fantasie

Passacaille from "Suite XIV"

D. Scarlatti

Sonata in A major Kk.322

Sonate in E major Kk.380

J.S.Bach

Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in D major BWV.998

Recorded at St.Barnabas Church, Finchley, London. January 1985

~~<<>>~~

Mostly slow, relaxing and unpretentious, but very effective play from Julian Byzantine who is very new to me. The Bach is fairly rhythmic and predictable but when the Weiss happens the feel becomes far more passionate. The Scarlatti is more energetic but with a pleasant hint of Trumpton : )

Hi Paul, Hope you like them both as they are considered to be soul classics. Didn't read you original post properly as Loving Arms is the first track on Still Caught Up.
