What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Also on its first play.

Tchaikovsky / piano concerto / Pogorelich, Abbado (1986)

Pogo doesn't go out of his way to bend the Tchaikovsky his way, but this performance is still very different from how everybody else plays it. He has a solid grip on the canvas, and fills it with flashes of amazing pianism. Abbado is with him all the way, and the recording brilliantly does justice to Pogorelich' bronze sound as well as the orchestra (with just a hint of glassiness on the top).

Cheers,

EJ

Mostly slow, relaxing and unpretentious, but very effective play from Julian Byzantine who is very new to me. The Bach is fairly rhythmic and predictable but when the Weiss happens the feel becomes far more passionate. The Scarlatti is more energetic but with a pleasant hint of Trumpton : )

Debs

I feel as if I can hear it just from your description.........

This was waiting for me at work -

A differing view from the Perahia/Hewitt versions I already own.  The discussion with Gould about the  recording on the disc is illustrative.

Followed by via ipod -

Someone on the forum gave me the heads up to this album and I've been blown away by it since getting a copy.  It's actually playing again via the Lenco as a type, so thanks to whoever you are!

And finally a selection from -

Godspeed You Black Emperor : Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! (2012).

(Interesting post rock. Same style and quality form this Montreal collective as 10 years before).

Karl,

Yello's Baby on original very thin vinyl is one of the best sounding LPs of all time imo.

I was lucky enough to find a mint condition one for £1 a couple of years ago in my local charity shop for local people.

I would be happy to pay a £100 for it if i didn't have a copy because its that good.

Glad you like it.

Yes the copy I have is thin and the sound quality is to die for.  For me it's a recording that you can play as loud as you like and it only gets better as the volume goes up (and we are talking LOUD!).  And the music is great fun - one of my top finds of the year and certainly the most frequently played LP in 2012.

Noone hardly talks about this later Goldberg Variations, but I actually prefer this set than his much famous first one.

If I recall he even admits there is a reason for this new recording. ( and I agree! )
