What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

After a long week - relaxing with a (bottle of) white whine and another disc from my early days as classical music collector: Ashkenazy playing Mozart's 15 and 16. Haven't spun this in years but it actually holds up quite well.

Cheers,

EJ

Vinyl. Columbia 1965. Great sixties beat.

WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS - MOVLP272
EMERSON LAKE & PALMER

This live album was originally released at the height of their popularity as a triple album. The performances are mind blowing and were recorded on their Someone Get Me a Ladder World Tour, and this album captures that tour perfectly.

180 gram audiophile vinyl
Deluxe triple-gatefold sleeve ( 'E L P' cut-out)

I have the ELP WBMFTTSTNE on triple vinyl, not sure of the version though. Great album though.

Just checked and I seem to have 2 versions Atlantic K80009 and MAnticore K63500 with the ELP cut out double gatefold.

A sincere effort to portray these ‘works for lute’ on guitar. Meticulous care for detail with a warm sense of timing make for a highly absorbing listen.

Top notch recording too from Dresden, Lukaskirche, 1984.

I always seem to enjoy these Capriccio cd’s : )

Mozart / piano concertos #15, 16 / Uchida, Tate (1991, original issue)

Same coupling, by Uchida and Tate. Pianist and conductor play off each other very nicely here, and with Uchida's superb control over dynamics and feeling for the currents of these concertos, this is one of their best discs. As ever in her first series, the slow movements are very slow with Uchida - a slowness that she fills with pearly notes, highlights and little figures as ornamentation to the music.

In comparison, Ashkenazy sounds plainspoken (which has its own charm; it's just that Uchida is, in the long run, more suited to repeated listening).

The sound is very good, but slightly soft focused and with a bloom on the piano.

Cheers,

EJ

+1. Surprisingly good, quiet pressing. Agreed with Stu -- this is a brilliant album.

Carole King: City Streets

All the tunes sound a bit tired and rehash of her old standards. But comforting to hear her voice every now and then.
