What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Mark,

I was not familiar with him until I got this on a whim (hey, I'm worth it.  ).  Did not know about his injuries until your comment.  A remarkable talent, to be sure!

On CD:-

Posted on: 04 November 2012 by EJS

Beethoven / concertos #2 & #3 / Stephen Kovacevich (1989)

#2 is the best of Kovacevich' second Beethoven cycle, and that's because he is at his mercurial best in the first and third movements while the orchestra doesn't have a lot to do. The slow middle movement is well sustained, with an effortlessly light touch (a glimpse of the 'old' Kovacevich). The recording quality is good but a bit inconsistent with minor occasional patches of clouded detail.

Cheers,

EJ

I like this better than the Grammy Winning Richter version.

Kuma,

What do you mean by 'brings down'? From where? To where?

Growing up, we used to listen on the Grundig to Richter playing Brahms second piano concerto and to Gilels playing the first. I don't remember who the conductors and orchestras were but it was always the pianist who counted the most..

Let us know when you are revisiting our windy city.
