Hi Karl, it's good to see you posting again. As part of kuma's ongoing review of all things Beethoven #1, I was reminded of SK's relatively unknown Australian cycle. With second hand prices between GBP 0.01 and 3.50, I took a punt and they don't disappoint. Kovacevich himself is (much) more assertive and accomplished than he was for the earlier cycle, but in other respect the Philips cycle remains the better one.
Cheers,
EJ
Thank you for your kind words, I enjoy posting as well as seeing what others are listening to, I just don't find the time to do so as often as I would like. I do however still listen to a lot of music from many genres (and keep buying new music which in itself takes up quite a lot of time).
Regarding the Classics for Pleasure series of LP's and CD's, there are, as I am sure you are aware, some real bargains to be had. I collected the RVW Symphony cycle (Vernon Handley) in the early '90's and would also recommend his performance of 'Job - A Masque for Dancing' (and still available). The highlight for me of the CfP series would be Shostakovich's two Piano Concertos with Dimitri Alexeev - I bought both the LP (CD not available in the mid '80's) and later the CD. It has long been a favourite and only supplanted in recent years by the Hamelin version on Hyperion. Again the Alexeev disc is still available new for a few pounds/euro's.
