What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Karl, it's good to see you posting again. As part of kuma's ongoing review of all things Beethoven #1, I was reminded of SK's relatively unknown Australian cycle. With second hand prices between GBP 0.01 and 3.50, I took a punt and they don't disappoint. Kovacevich himself is (much) more assertive and accomplished than he was for the earlier cycle, but in other respect the Philips cycle remains the better one.

Cheers,

EJ

Thank you for your kind words, I enjoy posting as well as seeing what others are listening to, I just don't find the time to do so as often as I would like.  I do however still listen to a lot of music from many genres (and keep buying new music which in itself takes up quite a lot of time).

Regarding the Classics for Pleasure series of LP's and CD's, there are, as I am sure you are aware, some real bargains to be had.  I collected the RVW Symphony cycle (Vernon Handley) in the early '90's and would also recommend his performance of 'Job - A Masque for Dancing' (and still available).  The highlight for me of the CfP series would be Shostakovich's two Piano Concertos   with Dimitri Alexeev - I bought both the LP (CD not available in the mid '80's) and later the CD.  It has long been a favourite and only supplanted in recent years by the Hamelin version on Hyperion.  Again the Alexeev disc is still available new for a few pounds/euro's.

Regards,

Karl

I am delighted that East Village Radio is back. It has been turned on all morning - currently playing Forty Deuce Restream.

Some Blues tonight.

Original vinyl. Fontana 1965.

Vinyl. Another Delmark recommendation for Graham. This one is as good as Hoodoo Man Blues.

Black Gold - this took some finding but was worth it.  The performance has a lovely quirkiness as befits the music whilst the sound is one of DG's best IMO. Still available new on CD as part of the DG Originals series.

Bought this on vinyl in the 70's when it was released on the ‘Embassy Label’ as B S & T The First Album with a review from Noel Edmunds on the back cover. It really has everything; great songs, amazing horn section, brilliant vocals from Al Kooper, who left after this album to be replaced by David Clayton-Thomas.

Graham.

Hi Karl,

Glad you enjoyed it!  I haven't listened to The Pizza Tapes in a long time.  Will have to dig it out.  You may also like "Shady Grove".
