What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I had the Hayes [UK] pressed version of the studio set and the HLM [gatefold] live Besancon recital The studio recording [made by British engineers in aSwiss radio studio if I remember right] is quite good, but very dry sounding, while the live recording is not one of the better lie recordings for its day. I doubt if any remaster could actually make it sound technically fine, though the playing is something unique, and very emotionally touching.
George,
I agree with a somewhat of a dry balance because it has very little low register resonance of piano coming through.
For performance, I listened to the rest of the studio recording now and actually his Mozart's No.8 sonata feels gloomier and restrained than his live recording. Scattered with sadness he dose not light up all through the tunes as if he's trying to reason with his fate. This set definitely feels even more retrospective than his live version for some reasons.
His Waltzs are lyrical and spirted for a dying man playing them. The notes just flows one from another with the right pauses. Lipatti still had the command of notes albeit the overall feel is softer. Astonishing amount of articulation and precision yet never let the tunes sound mechanical maintaining naturalness and wit.
More I listen it feels more like Lipatti's last story telling which in itself very compelling. As you say, this set is more about "witnessing" his courage than the performance itself.

Neil Young
Stu,
Does your copy sound good?
Sadly These are not the best of live recording. I reckon UK original 'should' sound better, tho.
There is a studio recording of Bach Partita and Mozart No.8 a few months before this concert (July ) and those sound much clearer and the pianist sound livelier. It's sad that it shows a rapid decline in his health in such a short period of time.
At his last recital, he was too weak to play the last of Chopin Waltz but he offered to play Bach Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring, instead. This tune did not get on the vinyl but he played it on earlier studio recording. Listening to that earlier. Talk about depressing. :/
Kuma,
I bought it with a bunch of others from my local charity shop years ago 10 for £1.00.
I dont think i have ever played it.
Will give it a listen over the weekend and let you know what the SQ is like.
Stu.

Karl
Yes, imo very recommended!
Don't expect the sound quality to be perfect considering most of them are recordings from the 50's,
but they sound fantastic to me.
Loads of easy going fun music to sit back and enjoy for not much money.

On Vinyl, album always sounds lush and beautiful.
Enjoying this with a glass of Laphoaig -
I've been a Bill Evans fan for many years and have had his complete Riverside recording on CD since the mid '90's . It a wonderful collection with the Scott La Faro trio tracks the highlight. I would love to get the Analogue Production set on 45 RPM but at £500 it's not going to happen!
The above disc arrived today, the Analogue Production's CD/SACD version. The intensity is sublime even breathtaking. Without doubt, Jazz Trio playing at its finest (IMO!)
