What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

Pines of the Via Appia, a.k.a. the Roman legion marching into Rome. Should be heard live, really, but as discs go, the Karajan is good.
EJ,
Have you tried Sinopoli's?
I found it very playful and full of expressions. Skillfully crafted and executed but avoid becoming academic.
Different.
... and it's only Tuesday(just)...
I am now on a Scriabin marathon and rampage. This is actually a very nice set with some fine playing by Maria Lettberg. I love Scriabin. Just finishing up the Preludes and will switch to the DVD next before returning to the Etudes.
Doug,
Hopefully, you are not forgetting our friend Safronitsky, the son in-law and a great pianist, in your Scriabin rampage.
Stuck with Schubert for quite sometime.
Taking a short break from Scriabin à la Maria Lettberg to list to Sciabin à la the historic recording of son in-law Vladimir Sofronitsky playing on Scriabin's own aged piano. The playing of Sofronitsky is quite extraordinary. The difficult matter here is only to get past the piano sound and into the magic of the music.
Thanks Haim for the remind of this album...
Shostakovich Symphony no. 7 'Leningrad'
Kondrashin/Moscow Philharmonic
Gotta be in the right mood to listen to Shosty and this record just sat on the table for a quite some time.
This is pretty much a downer/somber tune exasperated by Kondrashin's Russian flavour.
This is definitely a severe whether winter music.

Kuma,
Wish I had this disc... after you mentioned it in the other thread some time ago I wasn't able to find a new copy. As a rule I try to hear what Sinopoli has to say - and although he wasn't consistently inspired (his Verdi Forza del Destino strikes me as curiously dull), he has many visionary records to his name (his incomplete Bruckner cycle is worth hunting down, as are all his Strauss and Puccini operas). The most underrated conductor of our time, who sadly passed away much too early.
Cheers,
EJ
Some Jazz I actually enjoy, iTunes:-
Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman ~ junior recordings CD © 1993
I really like this, bonkers but mild electro music with rhythm...
and maybe a good one for the car cd player

Apparently a new album is coming out soon:
On the Guarniad website:-
First spin of Savall's and Koopman's second (2000) recording of the gamba sonatas.
Cheers,
EJ
Another first spin - astonishingly lyrical playing by Gustav Leonhardt on a unique instrument, the claviorganum, which is essentially a harpsichord with organ pipes attached. He also plays a harpsichord for the later works on this disc.
Cheers,
EJ
On the Guarniad website:-
Howard,
What do you think?

Album.
I have ways and means.
Sumptuous production.
I cant get enough of this CD album.
How i missed this when it came out on the 22nd September 2008 ??
I can see why people went mad for it on the Hoffman forum when it came out.
The SQ is stunning.
It can be bought so cheap from amazon sellers now.
I am off to find a vinyl copy.
