What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Eric Clapton, August
Mid-80's retro-trip, on remarkably well-preserved vinyl from Ben's in Guildford. Production courtesy of the leaden hand of Phil Collins, who also plays drums and contributes backing vocals, so the whole thing ends up sounding like a Phil Collins album. Occasional dips into Wonderful Tonight-level mawkishness. On the upside,Tina Turner makes a couple of appearances, and that jacket Eric's sporting on the cover is smashing.
Its still a Crap album even after you best points.
Stu.
Harsh. But perhaps not entirely unfair.
Just class

Wonderful Tonight is an appalling song (it is his Lady in Red tribute) a bit like In The Air Tonight, it is cringe-worthy to the nth degree AOR at its worst (these records should carry a Government Health Warning ... I think Clapton was drunk when he recorded it ... PC has a lot to answer for ... and to think this is the guy who was God and played with Mayall, Cream, D&TD, Blind Faith .... still I think he recovered now .. I hope so.
Killing Joke - Night Time
No input from Phil Collins on this one at all (I checked.)
Not exactly karaoke-fodder, but still cheerful and boppy compared to KJ's frankly terrifying "Hosannas from the Basements of Hell," which will be on next.
Don't mess with God.
Frontiers LP - 2012 release
First listen on the vinyl...
One part the ghost of Roy Orbison, one part ELO, and one part Travelling Raspberry, Jeff Lynne puts on his cardigan and slippers for his latest album.
But strangely enough imho it works very well, and I really like this album, and quite a lot too
Debs
Debs,
Hope you like it?
IMO its a load of poo.
Song choice and mastering are pants.
Stu.
Stu,
i don't think much of Frontiers vinyl, very thin flippy LP doesn't sound clear but i do like the music.

Top albums and great VFM.
Stu.
The versions of "Zombie Woof" & "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" on the first one are awesome. I need to grab the second one - and you are so right Stu about them being great VFM.
Electrifying live performance recorded off a priviate charity event in 1943.
From the liner notes:
On the afternoon of Aprril 25 there took place a concert in Carnegie Hall which was probably unique in the history of concert-giving. To gain admission to this concert, the audience could not buy tickets. Admission was to be had only by the purchase of War Bonds.
An additional feature of te even was the auctining, for the highest bid, again in War Bonds, of the manuscript of Maestro Toscanini's own orchestraion of The star Spangled Banner.
The result was that 11 million dollars were raised.
They recorded the same PC1 in '41, but this performance from this particular event has extracted the best performance out of everyone concerned.
I'm enjoying the 2008 CD reissue, remastered by Sony. It's crystal clear with a wide soundstage and nice black background. This is the way an album should sound! Lead singer/keyboardist Burton Cummings was only 20 years old when the band started making records.
His Mozart Piano Sonata No.13 is better than I remember.
Amasing that he's still precise and articulate as ever on this set yet notes flow naturally and not so uptight. It's clear that his musical timing is much more developed and mature than Eschenbach's.
LP - hi horse records re-issue : )
Op. 31 set

The new Blue Nile Hats Deluxe album. Why they thought to put this out as a deluxe with a hodgepodge of unreleased trax is beyond me. Smells of money grabbing by Virgin to me.
Only track on the second disc that is worth listening to is Lets Go Out Tonight.
By the way Walk Across is being issued out at the same time as a Deluxe.

Don't have a Coldplay disc in the house but have to admit they are an excellent band and this release is no different.

Just to waken me up a little this morning.

Up next the new remaster of this album with some unreleased trax added.
