What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

The new album from one my fav singer songwriters
Mine too! Greg's written so many great songs over the years. Living in Minneapolis, we've been attending his shows twice a year since 1989. Even now, in the autumn of his career, is always a great evening of music and story telling!

Now listening to this on Spotify where I found this evocative description of Greg Brown "...a Midwestern existentialist hobo with a quick draw mouth, a bloodied heart, and bourbon on his breath...".
Sounds like my kind of guy.
The Civil Wars on Spotify. I might have to buy the CD (Barton Hollow) as it sounds rather good.
Again a 1st press Stereo copy. Interesting that that the stereo presentation is much more primitive than Hard Day's Night. My favourite of the early albums.
Hi Steve.
Have you ordered the box set? If so when will you take delivery . Ordered mine today after all the good reviews on yesterdays thread, looks like it will be here on Wednesday. Only problem it's a joint Christmas present not sure it will stay under the tree that long. Hope you have had a good musical weekend take care.
Regards Graham.

Vinyl 1970. This album sounds phenomenal following the DR upgrades.
Handel / Ariodante / Curtis (2011)
With all due respect to Jacobs' brilliant Agrippina, last year's best Handel opera was Alan Curtis' Ariodante. Over the years, Curtis has gradually upped his game, from boring to sensitive and subtle; his low key approach to Handel is very different from Minkowski or the Italian crowd (Biondi, Alessandrini, Marcon etc), but on the long run just as rewarding, perhaps even more so. I certainly prefer this recording to Minkowski's, which is comparatively rough hewn. Still unmissable for Von Otter, though.
The work itself is among Handel's best.
Cheers,
EJ

Haven't played this album since I was in Goch in Germany in the early 70's

Yes, and Mingardo is indeed that rarity, a true contralto instead of the usual stretched mezzo-soprano; but rather cheap of Naive to repackage a decade old recording and present it as if new.
Otherwise, agree that this is a good performance that has Farnace sung by a bass rather than the prescribed male contralto (countertenor).
Cheers,
EJ
From the recently released 'Murray Perahia - The First Forty Years' box set. An early Christmas present.

Really enjoyed playing this in the car earlier today, on my way to see The Staves in-store @ Rough Trade East. I had previously preferred the stripped back '29', produced by Ethan Johns. When I spoke to the Staves soundman, the same one who mixed Ethan's gig recently, he said Ethan suggested his dad, Glyn, to produce Ashes, as he wasn't available.
Well Ethan & Glyn got together to co-produce The Staves debut album, Dead & Born & Grown, which is released tomorrow - http://www.thestaves.com/
playing the vinyl : )
The art of Fatigue, after working all day in the yard.
I really like this 2 disc set; many fine renditions of tunes, but the versions of Shower the People, Steamroller Blues, & Mexico on this live disc are outstanding.
