What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Have just been sent a copy of his latest album but haven't gotten around to playing as I am playing this album from 2006 instead.

First play on CD and my expectations of magic dust to have been sprinkled by Ethan & Glyn Johns has been surpassed. I already owned the Mexico & Motherload EP's and their simple acoustic recordings captured the girls wonderfully. The musicianship brought by Ethan & friends has raised the bar considerablly. The extra instrumentation has underpinned the exceptional voices that possesses the talented Staveley-Taylor sisters. This has every chance of being my album of the year

Who needs Steven Wilson

Premmyboy - Don't be late at the gig next week, it's sold out.

Rhino vinyl. Not bad but I think I prefer Live in New York Felt Forum 1970. The percussion mix , especially the cymbals are too forward and Robbies guitar too behind. More prose in this concert including WASP. This concert doesn't rock as much as at Felt Forum.

Disc's 1 and 2 - Miles Ahead/Porgy and Bess

Deep Purple - Machine Head 40th Anniversary Box Set - Disc 4 In concert '72

An album I never get bored of and I've been playing it since the mid '70. There's plenty to listen to here and I'm looking forwards to hearing the Quad version in HiRes - Enjoy, Come Taste the Band!

And Finally -

The album that introduced me to Soulful House - timeless.

Mozart Sonata No.2

22 year old Zimerman.

Very safe and reasonably articulate avoiding sounding clinical. They just sound like a piano practice pieces. Wondering when it's going to end.

It might be trendy to dismiss Nick's third record as "rushed","incomplete" or "unfinished". But you'd be wrong. It is sublime. Some of the greatest songs, sung with the greatest passion and talent. The phrasing of Nicks work is a special highlight. The raw and sparse production is perfect to my ears. I just love it to bits.

Beethoven's Fidelio tonight.  Just saw Seattle Opera presentation of this great opera.
