What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

With all the talk on the Beatles Top 3 albums thread, regarding Let It Be. Decided to give it a spin. It might not be in most peoples top three, but it is still a good album IMO.

Graham.

Hi Graham,

I don't think anybody here would dispute there is some great music on Let It Be but Phil Spector's production ruined for many what would have been a great album. Some redress was made with Let It Be Naked but I've always wondered what the album would have been like if George Martin had produced it at the time. One can only wonder.

Hi Steve.

Indeed. Just on the one can only wonder point . Do you think there is any material left in the Beatles vaults that we have not heard or is that 'well ' well and truly dry. I suspect that if there was we would have seen & heard it by now. Take care.

PS. I am just listening to an original stereo copy of Sgt Pepper before I can "open the box". What in your opinion is the best sounding and produced of the original albums.

 Regards Graham.

Joining in with the Beatles frenzy, I managed to get home at lunch time and spin this -

Bought in 1987 when the LP's were first issued on CD, this is in mono.

Just looking on AMG I didn't realise it was recorded in one night with one mic, a DAT recorder and the Holy Trinity hall in Toronto.

As you say superb, I was only 22 years behind in getting this album.

I almost got this out last night.  I was listening to Bob Dylan's Theme-time Radio Hour on XMradio, and he played Hank Williams' "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry" on his "Crying/Tears" show.  I thought it has been way too long since I've listened to this, and then got distracted with something else.  I'll make sure I listen to it tonight.  Their version of "So Lonesome..." is my favorite song on this album.

When I was at the University of Oklahoma, this album came out.  There was a guy who opened up a nice little Pasta restaurant near campus, and he seemed to play this album on eternal repeat.  When someone couldn't remember the name of the restaurant, they'd just say, "The Cowboy Junkies place."

Marc-Andre Hamelin who never disappoints. His vast playing spectrum is unmatched these days.

Mozart Piano Concerto No.20: Annie Fisher/Lukacs/Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

My first Annie Fisher record. Wow! This is just wonderful set. Annie Fisher's like sophisticated Argerich. A real fire and grace. She says so much with a minimum amount of key strokes. Never heard of this orchestra or conductor but they are excellent, too.

This Hungarian stereo pressing is also dead quiet and beautifully recorded and mastered.

A new ( old ) discovery like this keeps me digging deeper into the classical catalogue from the past.

New one on me Denis but her trax on the soundcloud page are stunningly good. I hope that the record co she goes with doesn't tinker with her sound that much. I will be following her with great interest.

Hi Ewen,

Rae came to my attention in the summer when Fink said she was touring with him. I saw her @ Cecil Sharp House, Camden and she was fabulous. I remember seeing Kiki Dee when she first started and like her, Rae was nervous to start, but quickly made you feel you were witnessing something special. I've been to quite a few gigs like that this year. Young musicians are alive and kicking and I'm glad to be receptive to their songwriting abilities.

The Grow EP is released on iTunes on 18 Nov & there will be a CD as well.

I highly recommend Rae's gigs and this is a brief 2013 tour that she announced last week...

Tue, 12th Feb, Brighton - Marlbourgh Theatre

Wed, 13th Feb, London - St Stephen's Church

Fri, 15th Feb, Manchester - St Phillips Church

Wed, 20th Feb, Glasgow - Arches Playroom
