What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Looking forward to seeing Rae supporting & playing with Fink @ Shepherds Bush Empire, 27 Nov.
Hi Ewen,
Rae came to my attention in the summer when Fink said she was touring with him. I saw her @ Cecil Sharp House, Camden and she was fabulous. I remember seeing Kiki Dee when she first started and like her, Rae was nervous to start, but quickly made you feel you were witnessing something special. I've been to quite a few gigs like that this year. Young musicians are alive and kicking and I'm glad to be receptive to their songwriting abilities.

When I first heard Walls, it was one of those 'fcuk me' moments...

The Grow EP is released on iTunes on 18 Nov & there will be a CD as well.
I highly recommend Rae's gigs and this is a brief 2013 tour that she announced last week...
Tue, 12th Feb, Brighton - Marlbourgh Theatre
Wed, 13th Feb, London - St Stephen's Church
Fri, 15th Feb, Manchester - St Phillips Church
Wed, 20th Feb, Glasgow - Arches Playroom
The videos she has up on her site are well worth a viewing as it will give you an idea of how seriously talented this girl is. Thanks Denis it is a long time since a new artist has given me a tingle on the old spine.
The only thing that scares me is how she will be handled by a major if she goes that way as it would be easy to overproduce her.
On CD:-
Disc's 1 and 2 - Miles Ahead/Porgy and Bess
Disc 3 just played - Sketches of Spain

On CD:-

Two of the best vinyl releases ever - assuming this as indicative of the pressing and reproduction quality of the other albums then I am absolutely delighted with the new box set ... I've not compared with my original rubber soul, but who cares this is fantastic ... all this and the mono box next year.
Album covers with no bar codes and adverts for Super Emitex
Late night listening -
Pre-work listening -
Mozart Piano Concerto No 23 and Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4 (from Vol. 4).

the soundtrack to the new hobbit movie, sounds good!
I will be listening to Ethan Johns performing live on BBC Radio Wiltshire this afternoon with Sue Davies from 2:40pm.

This evening, Ethan's in-store performance will be at Sound Knowledge in Marlborough at 7pm.
Vinyl 1969. A 2nd Bronze press but still good SQ. An old favourite, especially Dick Heckstall-Smith on sax and John Hiseman on drums. It makes a change from listening to the Beatles.

On CD:-
Sam Brown - Box
Fan Club Bio - http://www.onecandle.co.uk/biography/
Remember when bands had a great singer, were excellent musicians, wrote interesting songs, didn't need auto-tune or vocoders and just recorded music
If you do remember those day's, this is what happened when Sam released this album in 1997. There is not a bad track on the album, helped no end by no studio processing. Hearing real drums, bass, guitar, hammond & piano makes me all misty eyed.
I have heard a lot of excellent new (to me) female singers this year and it's been great to hear part of the legacy from one of our finest performers.
The CD was sent to me 'free' by Sam, after a delay to my order for her CD's 43 Minutes & Of The Moment. New copies are hard to come by, but some used disks from amazon are available for you rippers.

One of the new female singers I've found is Lucy Rose and here's a song from a 'Shower'...
Colombe Sessions ⎪ Lucy Rose - The Fire
The power of the internet deserves music of power...
A couple of clicks after watching Lucy Rose on YT, I found this clip from the Red 40th anniversary CD/DVD...
