What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

My album of the year so far ... or at least vying with Karine Polwart for it.

I guess it is the Scott's catchy titles that I really like "SDSS14+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter)".

Looking forward to vinyl turning up.

I love his later year live concert. His Schubert is the most pensive and come across as depressing at times but I enjoy Richter's varying moods. It's just his playing never gets monotonous.

This is a early digital recording by JVC live in Tokyo. LIke early Philips digital recording, the fidelity is impecable in that hard to imagine this is digital. ( must be 24/96 files at least )

Impeccable. Kuma, this is at least as good as the Denon sound.

Posted on: 20 November 2012 by kuma

Haim,

I've got his Beethoven Box set vinyl and his Concerto No.4 is very special. ( along with the Bösendorfer piano tone )

How are you liking his Beethoven sonatas?

It is truly a joyous occasion when I find a good sounding Richter. His performance is special but most of his records do not sound good.

More Schubert: Kempff's No13 is more optimistic and not as gloomy as Richter. Very different story telling style but as usual Kempff puts the sense of spontaneity, light rhythmic flair to the tune.

Pretty good Kuma - much better than the old LP (late 1980s) I had. Very happy but never heard a 1st UK press to compare it with though. Prefer it to the MFSL my mate has, which sounds a bit dull and CD-ish.

I'd be very interested to hear what the mono vinyl will be like as I LOVE the mono CD.

Kevin,

Thanks. I have the same crappy late 80s pressing so sounds like I ought to replace it with this new one.

Dull and CD-ish: that sounds like the past MFSL sound with a smily EQ.

Do you know which Beatles albums were intended for mono?

I've read somewhere that up to the White album was it?

Wonderful record .... mine is on lizard coloured vinyl

I just love this album

See You Don’t Bump His Head
Corps De Blah

Phrasing
SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter)
Epizootics!
Dimple
Tar
Pilgrim

The Day The "Conducator" Died (An Xmas Song)

It is every bit as engaging as The Drift and in some ways more accessible to non-Scott fans, and almost as good as Tilt. The two tracks I've put in bold are extraordinary. I know some folks think he rushed it in cramming it in to 6 years rather than usual 11 between releases, but it really is excellent - roll on the vinyl copy.

All up to and including the White Album ("Yer Blues" in mono sounds awesome). Apparently the Fabs themselves "supervised" the monos.

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON LP (VINYL) UK LONDON 1987.

I love everything about this album, songs, band, playing SQ, production. It’s just brilliant.
