What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Timeless...

All down to meticulous recording and some great  musicians. I actually bought the original album in 98 -say no more. Enjoy it!

A friend told me it's very good, too so I'll proably get the vinyl when it comes out next month.

How's current Sony vinyl sound quality wise?

Kuma, I don't have the Beethoven Piano Concerto yet to comment.  I listened to a minute of each track online though and I wan't turned off.

While I don't like everything he does with Chopin or other composers one thing for sure is that he is such a strong and bold player.  I also will applaud anyone who is strong enough to break away from the middle of the road and do something different than the supposed norm.  You may or may not enjoy his Chopin?

My motives may be entirely different than yours.  I'm desperately hungry for any vinyl from any pianists or chamber works.  SInce where I live isn't exactly a treasure trove for old vinyl I take what I can get.  I dream of the day if I could get old vinyl with complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas or Bach's WTC and the likes from the 50's/60's..  So to get a few Beethoven Piano Sonatas or even half the Chopin Etudes on vinyl is really an event for me because beggars can't be choosers.

The Sony vinyl is not the worst I have (and far from it).  There is some surface noise but nothing horrible.  This may be due to the fact that I haven't cleaned these LP's yet.  Mine are very flat.  I like the Live in Vienna probably the best so far and the Liszt is a close second.  The Vienna is probably 180g whereas the Liszt seems to be slightly less.  One thing for sure is that for the price (similar to CD price) I think it is a real bargain.

Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit - Swinging Paris: Alexandre Tharaud (Piano),

Madeleine Peyroux (Voice), Frank Braley (Piano), Juliette (Voice), Florent Jodelet (Percussion), Natalie Dessay (Soprano), Benabar (Voice), Jean Delescluse (Tenor), David Chevallier (Banjo)

If you might happen to like the light hearted swing music of the 1920's then you will certainly like this album.  I love this and think it is a brilliant album and only wished it would have been longer with more from everyone including Madeleine Peyroux.

Doug,

The Chopin pieces he chose are such popular ones in that they will invite for comparison and criticism for sure.

Looking forward hearing his latest Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise Brillante, for instance without theatrics. ( I have listened to his earlier rendition on YouTube but could not stand all his emoting :/ )

I might be more old fashioned as I do like Ingolf Wunder's Chopin interpretation. He's younger than Lang, but Iove his first Chopin album which DG did a great job manufacturing, I thought. I wish they would come out with more classical vinyl like this.

I am curious to find out the current new production of Sony vinyl. The CBS Masterworks used to put out awesome records. Sony European unit producing rather dire reissues currently but I am betting that the new pressing might be better. And sounds like what you say, it sounds decent.

Curious to know where they are made.

I am blessed to live in an area that plentiful of good record retail stores. Good thing is that noone wants classical records so they can be had for cheap ( excluding some audiophile collectible titles ) indeed much cheaper than CDs even the downloads. ( Apple wants a buck a tune! What are they nuts!? )

Yes, correct.

As I expected this set is going to be one of my top purchases of 2012.  Highly recommended but for prospective buyers, don't deliberate too long, it's a very limited issue.

Kuma,

Both the vinyl albums simply say Made in the EU.  Beside the Sony Classical image though is a logo of Shining Star Records.  The Studio works were recorded at Teldex Studio in Berlin and the live recordings were at the Musikverein, Vienna.

In regards to Ingolf Wunder, I could not agree with you more.  I absolutely prefer his playing and style (understated, pensive & poetic) which falls more in line with my view of Chopin and how I would tend to approach it as well.  I can only hope that Wunders next album "300" sees a vinyl release as well.

Kuma,

Apple definitely knows Die Kunst der making money. I wonder how much their iTunes contributed to their 117 Billions in cash reserves.

and to think, it might have been called something else.

Not a penny of mine, I refuse to buy anything from them!  I always get a bit concerned when a company wants your credit card details just to open an account with them (as they did the last time I tried).

The bodacious cowboy sounding glorious on this spangled leather poncho of a cover album. An essential Steely Dan album for any of their fans.

From Vinyl Box Set.

This is one of the better sounding albums in the box imo
