What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

He used to to work for a steamship line in the World Trade Center, but always wanted to be a photographer.  (In fact, the day of the first WTC bombing back in the 90's, his brother Tommy, who works for ABC News, called him because he knew Jeff always carried his camera, and there were no shots from the inside the building.  As bad luck would have it, Jeff hadn't brought his camera that day, and Tommy said "Too bad, we'd have paid $10,000 apiece for stills.")

Anyway, he got fed up with Korporate Amerika (who isn't who is still true to his or herself) and quit, and embarked on his dream.  He freelances and has done a LOT of work with musicians, including album covers for Manuel Barrueco and James Galway.  He has shot James Earl Jones, Pete Townshend, Todd Rundgren, The Avitt Brothers (from Concord, NC) and dozens of other Indie artists.

Google his name plus photography and you will find his site.  Former college roommate and lifelong friend.

Called Jeff after my last post, and got the inside info on this shot:

He had done an entire shoot with Willie Nile, and at the end he got a wild hair and decided to set his shutter speed on 1/30th of a second, and he had Willie just take his guitar & walk up and down in front of this building in NY (which he tells me has now been gentrified and is clean and no graffiti any more.)

The camera was a Mamiya 645 medium format film camera, and in fact this is a color film shot that they printed in B&W.  He used the Mamiya because he said he never could get the hang of the Hasselblad square negative format.

And now you know the rest of the story.

On CD, but glad I found the vinyl to buy yesterday. New album & tour next year hopefully.

Blimey, this was released in 1991 and still sounds great. Not sure what else was released in that year, but it would had to have been bloody good to sound better than this. My opinion of course

Joe's reinterpretation of Duke Ellington classics. I've never really listened to Duke Ellington but this is a fantastic album and a wonderful recording, like all Mr Jackson's albums. Highly recommended!

I heard this for the first time on a flight from the Far East to the UK.  I had no idea just how good this album is.  Bought the vinyl from amazon as soon as I got home.

The man's a genius.  How could I have missed this album for so long?
