What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

It's OK I'm not a huge LC fan but the simple production works well for me and I got the end , so on the wanted list.

This is a great album in my view, atmospheric and well recorded.

And then she went and did it all again. But different, this time. Still brilliant...maybe even more-so....

And one of the finest quality recordings in pop music (IMO). The S600s are just stunning with this record.

CD - elektra records 1972

[from the 5 x cd box-set] -

Rhino © 2011 Original Album Classics

Probably the best album of the bunch here.

The SQ is really good too, and...

Amazon have just dropped the price to £8.99 for the 5 album set

bit of a bargain : )

EJ,

I would say that this is Leonhardt's best on the Alpha label:

Haim, I ordered the Paganini for Two, too or should I say, as well.  Of course, with Schubert the piano works so well but I actually like this.  It is a nice change from the usual.  Actually, the guitar playing of Söllscher is a real highlight for me.  It just makes this music so much softer and maybe even melliferous.

Hi reubs,

Any thought's on the Submotion Orchestra? IMO they are superb. A bit like Zero 7, but with a bit more edge.

Intend to have it on the headphones today; glad to hear they have a bit of edge as I've always found Zero7 to be a bit bland.  Have you tried the remix album? I didn't recognise many of the remixers.

Downloaded the new Leila album U and I from Warp so will be giving that a go also.

How many vinyl albums do you have ?

I sold off my original collection when cd came out in the 80's.

To this day its the most stupid thing i have ever done.

Spent years trying to get them back on cd.

Then again over the last few years getting them back on vinyl.

So many cant be found any more on vinyl or cd.

Stu.

Hi Stu,

Interestingly the advent of CD spurred me to do the opposite. I bought a cd player about 1986 and was initially impressed. However I had a few hundred LPs and many older titles weren't available on cd at the time. So, when I became a consultant in 1987 I treated myself to new hi-fi system including an LP12. This was the best thing I could have done because people like yourself started dumping their LPs onto the second hand market. The 90's were particularly good for buying good quality used vinyl and my collection grew. In addition my father gave me his collection. He would record his vinyl onto tape for listening and so the LPs are in excellent condition.

I now have about 3000 LPs. I have recently divided them into 3 categories for storage;

1.Those records I wonder why ever liked, mainly from the 80s, are stored in the loft (although I don't like them now I can't sell them 'just in case'),

2. Those that are very collectible and that I listen to on a regular basis, about 1000, are stored in the listening room.

3. Those LP's that aren't played as regularly or are duplicates where I've replaced later pressings with good early pressings are kept upstairs in my old listening room. Still accessible but not cluttering the main listening room.

My tastes are wide but I never really grew up with classical music. In addition to rock/prog from my youth I my other passions are blues and jazz.

On Polydor, pressed by Deutsche Grammophone. There's a sticker on the back of the sleeve which indicates it was bought in Antwerp.

A really nice sounding record.

Coincidentally I bought this on 26/1/2008.

30th annivesary 5LP Box set.

Would have sounded a lot better if it hadn't been digitally remastered.
