What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The man's a genius.  How could I have missed this album for so long?

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of Life

You're not wrong!.. Bought my copy way back in the late '70s. On yellow vinyl with a single included, it's Mister Wonder's masterpiece.

Both my son's have their own copies..........good lads!

On CD. One of the modern giants, and sadly missed.

Tony, it is about time you did!

I recommend "Blues In Orbit", "Far East Suite" or "The Blanton-Webster Band" to start off with. You won't regret it!

+1

And if you havn't explored the Duke's work you may have missed the Count !  Basie's 'Complete American Decca Recording' on a 3 CD set and some of his latter work on Roulette (Atomic Basie/Kansas City Suite for example) are recommended.  Some of the finest big band swing jazz ever recorded IMO!

Original 1978 Vinyl.

Daryl and John hated this album. I understand that the vocal mic can sound a little thin, but it's not in that tinny, bootleg-sounding way. It actually makes this sound more intimate, like the small club it was recorded in,for H&O's '70s live sound, it can't be beaten.

On vinyl. I have delayed buying a CD version owing to all the controversy surrounding the Tony Banks remasters.
