What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anna Gourari (Piano)

Chaconne by Sofia Gubaidulina

Suite for Piano, Op. 26 "1922" by Paul Hindemith

Orgelbüchlein: Nun komm'der Heiden Heiland, BWV 599 by Johann Sebastian Bach / Busoni

Orgelbüchlein: Ich ruf'zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639 by Johann Sebastian Bach / Busoni

Partita for Violin solo no 2 in D minor, BWV 1004: 5th movement, Chaconne by Johann Sebastian Bach / Busoni

Transcription of J.S. Bach Prelude BWV 855 for piano in B minor by Alexander Siloti

"Anna Gourari is a young musician steeped in the venerable Russian piano school, its technical verities and Old World glamour. She has “a very physical, even visceral quality to her music-making that conjures the sound of such golden-age figures as Horowitz and Cortot,” declared Fanfare. With her ECM debut, Gourari offers a set of “Canto Oscuro”: dark songs. "

George Frideric Händel:  Lisa Smirnova (Piano)

Suite for Harpsichord in G minor, HWV 432

Suite for Harpsichord in F-sharp minor, HWV 431

Suite for Harpsichord in F minor, HWV 433

Suite for Harpsichord in F major, HWV 427

Suite for Harpsichord in E minor, HWV 438

Suite for Harpsichord in E minor, HWV 429

Suite for Harpsichord in E major, HWV 430

Suite for Harpsichord in A major, HWV 426

"ECM New Series debut for Lisa Smirnova, playing Georg Friedrich Händel’s Eight Great Suites (1720), also known as “The Eight London Suites” or “Suites de Pièces pour le Clavecin”, major pieces in the keyboard literature, too rarely brought together on disc. The 1720 edition of suites (HWV 426-433), published by the composer himself, is amongst the most important collections of Handel’s early works. Handel’s early biographer John Mainwaring noted that the “fullness and activity of the inner parts” of these keyboard works ensures that “few persons are capable of doing them justice”. Smirnova who has worked extensively on the Eight Great Suites, rises comprehensively to the challenge, on the modern piano, in these recordings made at Schloss Goldegg in Austria."

Sam Brown - Box

Listening to one of my most enjoyable aquisitions this year (Sam sent it to me after a delayed order). The songwriting & musicianship on this CD is outstanding and has been engineered wonderfully. It's available Used - Like New on amazon and highly recommended.

In anticipation of Psychedelic Pill on vinyl arriving.

Posted on: 29 November 2012 by birdie339

I have Psychedelic Pill on CD and it's brilliant. I regret ditching my record player but with the Uniti and a good set of speakers I'm coping! At least I won't countenance mp3 (might annoy Mr Young!).

This is simply the best Drifters collection ever in my opinion, original recordings of great sing along tunes, On Broadway, Up on the Roof etc. fantastic, buy this if you are a Drifters fan and buy it if your not, it will grow on you.

Graham.

Arrive yesterday and played 3 time already, thanks for the heads up Graham it's clearly an album I’ve missed!

This must be a model for this type of record ie golden/greatest hits – no dud tracks, doesn’t overstay its welcome and leaves you wanting more – recommended.
