What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Just in from the mailbox and even with the effects of a -20deg C disc put into a warm room this disc just warms my heart from the inside out.  Wonderfully recorded on a beautiful Steinway Model D (because sound matters in music!), I wonder if this is Yevgeny Sudbin's best recording to date?  A superlative, surely, that seems hard to fathom given the previous recordings he has already given us.  OK, I have every recording and make no apologies for being Sudbin partisan.

Musically stunning and brilliant as well.  Maybe this Gaspard will give Pogorelich (my current champ on the podium) a run for his money?  The opening of Funérailles really, for the first time I can remember, effectively demonstrates what bass on a piano should sound like.

Maybe I won't be quite so enamoured once the disc warms up to room temperature?  Could be but I'll let you know after a spend some more time this weekend with this!

Doug,

My number one Sudbin has always been (at room temperature):

It was my door opener to Scriabin before Safronitsky, Gourari and Hamelin showed up later, and I still enjoy him the most.

Original Vinyl 1978 (Elektra Records)

Why after watching the excellent Doors at Live at the Bowl ‘68’ concert on Sky Arts last night. This is a very underrated Doors album IMO. John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek reunited in 1978 to record backing tracks to Jim Morrison's poetry from a session in 1970. It works beautifully.

The famous 'Christmas Concerto'

Immediately twice listening suggested as high volume as possible - your mood will change I am sure.

Far-far the best performance what I've ever heard.

SACD - I had hoped to get the vinyl issue of this album but too late.  If the SQ of this disc is anything to go by, the LP must be quite special.  Anyone heard it?

Good - although I have a late 70s/early 80s Jap pressing which is better.

Almost finished listening to this from the box set - it still sounds a bit disappointing, although I can't quite put my finger on it. "Slow and draggy" is the best way I can describe it.

This CD was recommended on here by ewemon some weeks ago. It is excellent, if you like like John Hiatt you should like this.
