What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Brahms piano concerto #1 / Stephen Kovacevich and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

Sawallisch draws autumnal colors from the orchestra with plenty of drama, and provides a good environment for Kovacevich, on all-cylinders mode. One of the best Brahms Firsts ever recorded, IMO. This issue sounds a bit better than the original, overly bright recording.

Cheers,

EJ

I think this is a really great (and in some ways underrated) Stones album - I love the acoustic nature of many of the tunes.  (Factory Girl, Prodigal Son)

On original vinyl.

This is also not a bad stones album.

Love that photograph, definitely Rameau colors. It is refreshing to see a musician pictured in an environment outside the concert hall. Shows a little more character.

Yes it's a lovely picture, the whole booklet is done this way, I believe it to be a tram from the 19th century with lovely painted ceilings and panels inside. It contains some other nice pictures.

but the most rewarding is the music of course. A great achievement for her debut CD

Vilde Frang's Sibelius and Prokofiev are of the same blood group, hovering between classical line and modern expression, with a central unease and bleakness at their core. She brings it off with enormous charisma, and to me, her performance of the Sibelius matches the (very different) interpretations by Viktoria Mullova (her debut, with Ozaka) and Anne-Sofie Mutter. Where her older peers took a more aloof, detached approach, Frang does the same but not to the same degree - she comes as close as the music can bear. Too close, and the music begins to fall apart (as in most recorded performances).

Cheers,

Are you Tolkien to me...

Nén by Fauns - listen here http://fauns.bandcamp.com/

Inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien

The Berlin based Fauns combine acoustic instruments with rock appeal, folkloristic influences with elements of progressive rock, melancholic...moments with sound explosions.

Never heard of this pianist before.

Who's this Gyögy Sandor?

This Van Gelder recorded/mastered VOX vinyl sounds brilliant and a sparkling performance to match.

I love the new discovery like this.

First listen - a present for my wife, Diane, for one of our children.

Apart from the sound level being at a very high level (the SN volume control is barely off the end stop!) this is an very enjoyable album.

The final vocal appearance of Anneke van Giersbergen, who left the gathering after 13 years of wonderful music. A very interesting band who I discovered after seeing Anneke, as a solo artist, liking Airbag on MySpace.

Nice quiet pop music (thanks to this forum).
